⚙️ Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

📍 Location: Birmingham
🏡 Working Pattern: Hybrid
📌 Full-time

We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established building services consultancy in Birmingham. This opportunity would suit someone who enjoys staying technically hands-on, while also taking greater ownership of projects, client relationships and junior engineer support. You will be involved across the full project lifecycle, from early concept and detailed design through to tender and delivery support.

🔎 The Role

You will:

  • Lead selected mechanical building services projects and work packages
  • Take projects from initial brief and concept through to detailed design, tender and delivery support
  • Produce and review mechanical calculations, schematics, layouts, specifications and technical reports
  • Design heating, cooling, ventilation and associated mechanical building services systems
  • Coordinate designs with electrical, public health, architectural, structural, fire and sustainability teams
  • Attend client and design team meetings, providing clear technical input
  • Review technical output and support junior engineers and technicians
  • Help maintain strong technical standards across project delivery
  • Build trusted client relationships and support repeat business
  • Incorporate sustainability, low-carbon design and compliance into engineering decisions

👤 What we are looking for

  • Degree, HNC or HND in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline
  • Ideally 4 to 6 years+ mechanical building services design experience
  • Consultancy background with experience delivering coordinated mechanical design projects
  • Strong hands-on experience with calculations, schematics, layouts, specifications and design reviews
  • Good Revit and/or AutoCAD capability
  • Knowledge of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance and relevant standards
  • Experience leading projects or mechanical work packages
  • Confidence dealing directly with clients and multidisciplinary design teams
  • Experience supporting or mentoring junior engineers
  • Interest in low-carbon, renewable, BREEAM and net-zero design
  • Strong communication, organisation and project delivery skills
