About Us
Power & Water is a growing engineering and technology company delivering innovative equipment and process solutions for the water, wastewater, industrial, and environmental sectors. We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of new products and systems from concept through to manufacture and installation. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who combines strong technical design capability with practical manufacturing knowledge and the ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
The Role
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take ownership of mechanical design projects, transforming customer and business requirements into practical, cost-effective engineering solutions. You will work closely with internal teams, suppliers, and customers to develop innovative products and continuously improve existing designs. The role will involve a combination of concept development, detailed mechanical design, engineering analysis, project coordination, and technical leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
- Capture, define, and document design requirements from customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
- Research and develop innovative engineering concepts supported by calculations, modelling, and feasibility assessments.
- Create detailed 3D models, technical drawings, and manufacturing documentation using CAD software.
- Develop prototype and production-ready designs that meet performance, quality, safety, and cost objectives.
- Conduct engineering analyses including structural assessments, simulation, manufacturing feasibility reviews, and performance evaluations.
- Review and resolve technical issues arising during development and manufacturing.
- Manage engineering change processes and maintain design revision control.
- Present design concepts and technical solutions during design review meetings.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and industry best practices.

Project Management
- Manage multiple projects through concept, design, prototype, manufacture, and installation stages.
- Track project progress, deliverables, budgets, and design modifications.
- Prepare technical reports, specifications, and project updates for internal and external stakeholders.
- Support cost investigations, quotations, and value engineering activities.
- Deliver projects within agreed timelines and budgets.
Product & Manufacturing Support
- Manage and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), engineering drawings, and CAD data.
- Support manufacturing teams through design-for-manufacture and process improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to continuous improvement activities and Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Participate in workshop assembly, testing, commissioning, and site activities where required.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Mentor and support junior engineers and technical staff.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, production, procurement, sales, and operations.
- Build strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and external partners.
- Share technical knowledge and contribute to the professional development of the wider engineering team.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Manufacturing Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Significant experience in mechanical design and product development.
- Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally with Autodesk Inventor Professional.
- Experience managing and maintaining BOMs.
- Strong understanding of engineering design principles and manufacturing processes.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and technical decision-making skills.
- Experience producing engineering calculations and technical documentation.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management tools.

Desirable
- Experience with Autodesk Vault.
- Experience with CFD simulations.
- Background in fabrication, sheet metal design, and stainless-steel pipework.
- Knowledge of PVC pipework systems and GRP equipment.
- Experience with design simulation and engineering analysis tools.
- Understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Knowledge of relevant engineering standards and legislation.
- Membership of a professional engineering institution (e.g., IMechE) or working towards chartership.
