🔧 Senior Design Engineer – Mechanical

📍 Birmingham | Solihull | Nottingham | Derby | Leeds | Huntingdon 💷 Up to circa £60,000, depending on experience 📄 Permanent | Full-time | Agile working

Are you a Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer who wants greater project ownership—without moving away from hands-on engineering?

We are supporting a privately owned, multidisciplinary building-services and low-carbon consultancy with the appointment of Senior Design Engineers across several UK offices. This is not a management-only position. You will remain technically involved in mechanical design and calculations while leading selected projects, working directly with clients and supporting junior engineers.

The opportunity

You will take responsibility for complex mechanical building-services projects from initial brief and concept development through coordinated design, tender and delivery support.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading selected mechanical projects or defined project packages
  • Producing and reviewing mechanical calculations, drawings and specifications
  • Designing heating, cooling, ventilation and low-carbon systems
  • Developing design reports, schematics, layouts and equipment schedules
  • Using Revit and/or AutoCAD to deliver coordinated design information
  • Coordinating with architectural, structural, electrical, public-health and sustainability teams
  • Attending client and principal design-team meetings
  • Presenting technical options, risks and recommendations
  • Responding to tender and construction-stage technical queries
  • Supporting commissioning and handover where required
  • Delegating work to junior engineers and reviewing technical output
  • Helping improve design quality and engineering standards across the team

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we are looking for

You should have:

  • A degree, HNC or HND in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Ideally four to six years of post-qualification mechanical building-services design experience
  • Experience taking personal ownership of complex mechanical design projects
  • Strong hands-on experience with mechanical calculations and system selection
  • Practical Revit and/or AutoCAD capability
  • Experience producing coordinated drawings, schematics, reports and specifications
  • Working knowledge of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance and relevant British or European standards
  • Confidence communicating with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary design teams
  • Experience leading projects, coordinating stakeholders or supporting junior engineers

Strong candidates with three to four years’ experience may also be considered where they can demonstrate genuine Senior-level autonomy and project ownership.

More experienced Senior or near-Principal engineers are equally welcome, provided they want to remain technically hands-on and their expectations align with the position. Experience in any of the following would be particularly valuable:
