Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Contract

Job Type: Contract – 6 Months
Start date: ASAP
Location: Teddington
Working Arrangements: Hybrid – minimum 2 days per week on site
Hours: 36 hours per week
Rate: £45-55/hr Outside IR35

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a leading scientific and engineering organisation in Teddington.

You will be responsible for the end-to-end mechanical design of precision instruments, test equipment, and measurement systems, translating customer requirements into robust, manufacturable solutions.

Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will collaborate with scientists, engineers, project managers, manufacturing teams, and suppliers to deliver high-quality designs to cost and programme requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop precision mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Produce 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings.
  • Interpret customer and technical requirements.
  • Apply DFMA principles and sound engineering practices.
  • Work with multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Support technical problem-solving, risk management, and engineering change.
  • Ensure designs meet quality, cost, and delivery requirements.

Essential Skills

  • Proven mechanical design experience within precision engineering, scientific instrumentation, aerospace, defence, or a similar environment.
  • Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally SolidWorks.
  • Experience with PLM systems and detailed engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of ISO GPS, BS8888, materials, tolerancing, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience applying DFMA principles.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
