FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading service provider in the wastewater industry for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to strengthen their team.
This role is based in Rickmansworth, hybrid working available

Senior Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities
- Report to the Principal Engineer, Design Managers, Technical Discipline Lead, and Regional Discipline Lead.
- Produce cost-effective design layouts that meet specification requirements and can be constructed and commissioned efficiently.
- Prepare and check all design deliverables, including specifications, schedules, drawings, and calculations.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to develop comprehensive site and plant 3D models.
- Utilise standard designs and established best practices wherever possible.
- Deliver design-stage outputs within agreed timescales and budgets.
- Coordinate design deliverables across all technical disciplines.
- Provide estimates and technical feedback to the Proposals team.
- Build effective working relationships with construction teams and supply chain partners to promote buildability and design efficiency.
- Follow established procedures and processes to support ongoing departmental development.
- Assist in the creation, improvement, and review of departmental procedures and processes.
- Maintain accurate files and records throughout each contract’s duration.
- Support customer satisfaction by maintaining a customer-focused approach, recognising that customers include internal teams as well as end users.
- Assist in supervising and developing junior staff.
- Help ensure a safe working environment for all team members.
- Minimise waste across all departmental activities.
- Ensure design solutions address environmental considerations.
- Ensure all designs fully comply with CDM 2015 Regulations and health and safety requirements.

Senior Engineer – Mechanical Requirements
- Demonstrable experience and knowledge of engineering principles, including structures, materials, hydraulics, and environmental engineering.
- Strong understanding of water and wastewater treatment processes.
- Experience managing and mentoring staff in the design of discipline-specific elements for water and wastewater treatment plants.
- Membership of a relevant professional institution chartered or working towards chartership.
- Preferred: Degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Minimum: HND in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Ability to rationalise designs and develop cost-effective plant layouts.
- Broad knowledge of all aspects of water treatment, including mechanical, process, and electrical engineering, as well as project management.
- Working knowledge of roles and responsibilities under CDM 2015 Regulations.
- Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., BS, WIMES, BSRIA), regulatory requirements (PUWER, LOLER, PSSR 2000, DSEAR), and water quality regulations such as The Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2016 (Reg31) and guidance from the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI).
- Proficient in relevant computer applications.
- Full driving licence.
