Main Purpose of the Role

To work as a Senior Mechanical Engineer within FHP Group’s Technical Management and Design Division based in Birmingham. The role requires applying broad technical expertise, commercial awareness, and professional judgement to lead the design, coordination, audit, and delivery of mechanical building services across a wide range of sectors.

The individual will undertake technical management surveys (Due Diligence, Dilapidations, PPM, and Building Audits), prepare high quality written reports, and manage mechanical projects from initial client brief through detailed design, tender, and contract supervision to completion.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Technical Management & Building Audits: Manage and participate in site inspections and building services audits, producing comprehensive reports covering Technical Due Diligence, Dilapidations Schedules, Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), and Asset Condition Surveys.
  • Mechanical Design & Engineering: Carry out detailed mechanical concept, tender, and contract design for HVAC, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, public health, gas, and energy management systems in accordance with current standards and legislation.
  • Project & Financial Management: Design, manage, and supervise projects; establish client briefs, technical scope, cost plans, and deliverables; monitor engineering resource requirements, project fees, variations, and overall financial budgets.
  • Calculations & Software Proficiency: Perform complex engineering calculations and system simulations using industry-standard tools including Heavacomp, Cymap, Office 365, and AutoCAD/REVIT.
  • Site Supervision & Quality Assurance: Supervise on-site installation works, review workmanship, witness testing and commissioning, and ensure project completion deadlines and quality standards are strictly met.
  • Team Leadership & Mentoring: Act as Team Leader on multi-disciplinary projects, assigning tasks, providing guidance, and reviewing the work of junior engineers, graduate engineers, and contractors.
  • Client & Stakeholder Management: Maintain excellent relationships with clients, architects, and design team members to achieve high satisfaction, secure repeat business, and pursue new commercial opportunities.
  • Compliance & Standards: Implement company Health & Safety procedures, CDM Regulations, ISO 9001 (QA), and ISO 14001 (Environmental) systems on all assigned projects.

Person Specification Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • Preferably 5+ years’ post-graduate experience within an M&E consultancy, contractor, or technical management environment.
  • Demonstrated track record in building services design and conducting technical site surveys (Due Diligence, Dilapidations, PPM, Condition Surveys).

Technical Skills & Software

  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical building services design principles, HVAC systems, public health, and M&E compliance standards.
  • Proficiency in Heavacomp, Cymap, Office 365, and AutoCAD; working knowledge of REVIT and thermal modeling software is advantageous.
  • Ability to produce complete specifications, schedules, tender documentation, and detailed technical inspection reports.

  • Exceptional written English skills with proven ability to author clear, structured Technical Management reports.
  • Strong commercial awareness, understanding the relationship between scope of works, project duties, and fee structures.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with both technical teams and client-facing stakeholders.
  • Conscientious, focused, and innovative approach to solving complex engineering and commercial problems.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly to project sites across the UK (including remote locations where required).
