Senior Mechanical Engineer (design)
Location: St Asaph, North Wales
Contract Type: Limited Company – Outside IR35
Contract Duration: 12 Months
Rate: £50–£55.00 per hour (Ltd)
Working Hours: 40 hours per week
Working Pattern: Hybrid

The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join an engineering team delivering a portfolio of clean water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the UK.
This is a 12-month contract opportunity, operating Outside IR35, offering £50–£55 per hour through a Limited Company.
The successful contractor will provide mechanical engineering expertise across the project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to construction, commissioning and handover.
The role would suit an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in the UK water and wastewater sector, particularly those with experience delivering treatment works, pumping stations and associated mechanical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver mechanical engineering designs for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
- Produce and review technical specifications, calculations, drawings, schedules and engineering reports.
- Develop mechanical equipment specifications covering pumps, pipework, valves, pressure systems, tanks, screens and treatment process equipment.
- Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including civil, process, electrical and ICA engineers.
- Support design reviews, constructability assessments and value engineering exercises.
- Ensure designs meet client requirements, relevant legislation, industry regulations and applicable engineering standards.
- Provide technical support through procurement, installation, commissioning and project handover.
- Review supplier quotations, technical submissions, equipment data and vendor documentation.
- Attend site visits and provide engineering support where required.
- Contribute to the successful delivery of projects against programme, technical and quality requirements.

Requirements
Essential
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Proven experience delivering mechanical engineering projects within the UK water and wastewater industry.
- Strong knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes and associated mechanical equipment.
- Experience producing engineering calculations, specifications and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with CDM Regulations and relevant UK engineering standards.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Previous experience working in a contractor or consultancy environment.
Desirable
- Experience working on AMP programmes.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration.
- Experience working with United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, Severn Trent Water or other UK water utility frameworks.
- Knowledge of BIM and multidisciplinary design environments.
- Experience supporting projects through construction and commissioning.
