Senior Mechanical Engineer | Colchester area | £50,000-£70,000 + benefits
The Role
An established manufacturing business in the Colchester area is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join a multi-disciplinary engineering team developing new automated manufacturing processes.
This is a hands-on role focused on designing and developing small, complex precision machinery, from initial concept and prototyping through to testing and implementation. You'll work with technologies including servos, stepper motors, robotics, camera inspection and automated handling systems.
- Lead the mechanical design and development of automated machinery and manufacturing processes
- Design component handling systems and tooling using SolidWorks
- Develop prototypes and trial new processes and technologies
- Work alongside electrical, software and manufacturing engineers to integrate automation into production
- Identify opportunities to improve throughput, quality and production flexibility
- Test and validate new machinery and processes
- Develop solutions across processes including welding, soldering, potting, miniature assembly, testing and inspection
- Maintain engineering drawings, models and documentation within an ISO 9001 environment
- Ensure designs meet appropriate safety and engineering standards

About You
You'll have experience in mechanical design, manufacturing engineering, process engineering or automation, ideally within a precision manufacturing environment.
You'll Ideally Have
- Strong 3D CAD experience, preferably SolidWorks
- Experience designing machinery, tooling or automated equipment
- Experience working with small, miniature or delicate components
- Good knowledge of engineering practices, manufacturing processes and tooling
- Experience developing prototypes or new manufacturing processes
- An understanding of machine safety and safety-by-design
- Experience working within an ISO 9001 environment
- Strong problem-solving skills and a practical approach
