Senior Mechanical Engineer – Switchgear & Thermal Systems - Remote - 6 Month Contract

Role: Senior Mechanical Engineer – Switchgear & Thermal Systems

  • Contract: 6 months
  • Location: Remote, with occasional travel to site as required
  • Engagement: Contract

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to support a technically advanced engineering programme involving high-power electrical and charging systems. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong mechanical design capability, with particular experience in switchgear/enclosure design, thermal management and air-handling systems. The successful engineer will work alongside electrical, controls and systems engineering teams to develop robust mechanical solutions for complex, high-power electrical equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and development activities for high-power electrical equipment and associated enclosures.
  • Design and develop switchgear cabinets, electrical enclosures and equipment housings.
  • Develop effective thermal management and cooling solutions for high-power electrical systems.
  • Design and specify air-handling, ventilation and airflow systems to maintain appropriate equipment operating temperatures.
  • Undertake mechanical and thermal calculations to support design decisions and component selection.
  • Work closely with electrical engineers to ensure appropriate packaging, clearances, accessibility and integration of electrical components.
  • Support design reviews, technical problem-solving and design optimisation.
  • Produce and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, calculations and technical documentation.
  • Support prototype build, integration, testing and commissioning activities.
  • Liaise with suppliers and manufacturing partners where required.
  • Ensure designs consider manufacturability, serviceability, reliability and relevant engineering standards.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with high-power charging infrastructure, power electronics or HV electrical systems.
  • Thermal simulation, CFD or other thermal analysis experience.
  • Cooling of power electronics, inverters, converters or similar high-power equipment.
  • Environmental sealing, ingress protection and enclosure IP ratings.
  • Experience designing equipment for demanding environmental or operational conditions.
  • Experience within automotive, marine, aerospace, energy or other advanced electrification environments.

Working Arrangement

The role can be performed predominantly remotely, with flexibility required to travel to site for key design reviews, integration, testing and commissioning activities.

This would suit an experienced mechanical engineer who can quickly take ownership of a workstream and bring strong switchgear enclosure, thermal management and air-handling expertise to a technically demanding programme.
