Astute's Power team are currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Estimator to join the team supporting the Net Zero project.

This is an opportunity for an experienced estimator with a strong mechanical construction background to take a senior role within the estimating team, supporting accurate project pricing, cost forecasting and commercial submissions.

The Senior Mechanical Estimator position comes with a hourly rate from £75.00 to £84.00 inside IR35.

Role responsibilities and key skills for the role:

  • Lead and support estimating activities across assigned bid teams, including managing estimating workload and resources.
  • Prepare accurate costings for materials, labour and equipment through detailed review of drawings and specifications.
  • Review contract submission requirements and ensure all financial information and compliant design proposals are accurately captured.
  • Establish and agree key plant rates, working closely with engineering and planning teams to agree construction methods, outputs and plant selection.
  • Analyse subcontractor quotations and manage the preparation of preliminary and general expense pricing, including plant schedules and risk assessments.
  • Prepare settlement papers and undertake adjustments required prior to financial submissions.
  • Take responsibility for the sign-off of cost elements and ensure cost planning reflects project requirements and risk profiles.
  • Work with subcontractors and specialist suppliers to develop cost forecasts and reports.
  • Coordinate the production of cost information and submissions for senior management.
  • Respond to customer queries, including post-tender queries, and contribute to customer meetings and presentations.
  • Ensure effective handover of bid documentation to the project commercial team.
  • Undertake measurement, quantity take-offs and pricing using relevant estimating systems and digital tools.
  • Support the development and implementation of digital estimating tools, including 5D cost planning.
  • Provide mentoring, commercial and technical guidance to Estimators and wider bid teams.

Experience required:

  • Previous experience estimating the site erection and installation of large-scale mechanical equipment, including HRSG boilers, steam turbine generators, bespoke mechanical equipment, skids and modules.
  • Detailed knowledge of high-integrity pipework systems and exotic pipework materials.
  • Experience tendering projects within petrochemical, nuclear or other regulated environments.
  • Experience working with NAECI labour agreements.
  • Experience pricing and developing customer MTOs.
  • Previous experience managing estimating processes within the construction industry.
  • Valid CSCS card.
  • Relevant professional qualification or membership of a professional body is desirable, such as RICS, CIOB, RIBA, ICE or CIBSE.
  • Knowledge of Lean Construction and 5D cost planning is desirable.
  • Understanding of BIM, including the ability to read and assemble BIM models and produce appropriate reports.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with customers, partners and stakeholders under pressure.
  • Previous team leadership experience is desirable.
  • Strong IT, numeracy, MS Office and estimating systems skills.
