Senior Mechanical Project Design Engineer

About the Role
Our client, a leading provider of bespoke automation and robotic systems in the UK, is seeking an experienced Lead / Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. With nearly 50 years of expertise in the design, development, and manufacture of special purpose automation machinery, they are now expanding their team to support their strategic growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and oversee special purpose machine projects from order acceptance to customer handover.
- Perform mechanical design and detailing using 3D CAD within project timelines.
- Arrange Design Reviews to ensure project requirements are met.
- Obtain Design Pass Off by the customer on time.
- Produce Bill of Materials (BOMs) within budget.
- Negotiate with external suppliers for cost-efficient materials.
- Assist the electrical design process and compile build folders.
- Provide direction and support to fitters, electricians, and other engineers.
- Conduct machine risk assessments during the design phase.
- Lead projects during development and installation phases.
- Ensure compliance with H&S and safety rules.

Requirements
- Degree qualified/HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum of 7 years' experience in mechanical design, ideally related to automation machinery.
- Expert user of 3D parametric CAD package (Solid-edge, Solid-works, Inventor, Creo).
- Proven track record of delivering mechanical design projects within timescales and budgets.
- Knowledge of national and international standards for machine design and safety.
- Self-motivated and positive approach to problem-solving.
- Commercially aware with strong communication skills.
