James McKenzie Mortgages
James McKenzie Mortgages is a specialist mortgage and protection advisory business, focusing primarily on providing mortgage and related financial wellbeing services to employees of large multinational companies. Mortgages represent one of the most significant financial commitments individuals will make during their lifetime, and access to professional mortgage advice is an increasingly valuable employee benefit.
The role of a Mortgage Consultant encompasses offering advice to our clients, who have elected to use our mortgage services via their employer's benefit platform, on a variety of mortgage and protection matters, ensuring compliance with FCA regulations, lender requirements and company procedures. You will be joining a team of highly skilled professionals and, following your initial training, you will be providing expert advice on residential mortgages, remortgages, first-time buyer mortgages, buy-to-let lending and associated protection products. Whilst tailoring your approach to the needs of each individual client, you will strive to help clients navigate the mortgage landscape with confidence, professionalism and empathy.
This is a service-led advisory role rather than a sales-focused position. Clients are provided through established corporate partnerships and internal referral channels. There are no individual sales targets or commission structures attached to this role. Success is measured through client outcomes, service quality, compliance, technical knowledge, client satisfaction and contribution to the wider business.
Main Responsibilities
- Offering expert mortgage and protection advice to James McKenzie clients whilst ensuring recommendations are suitable, compliant and aligned with clients' objectives.
- Advising clients on residential purchases, remortgages, first-time buyer mortgages, home mover mortgages, buy-to-let lending and associated borrowing requirements.
- Assessing clients' financial circumstances, affordability and borrowing capacity whilst ensuring compliance with FCA regulations and internal procedures.
- Building and maintaining strong client relationships, offering a bespoke, professional and empathetic service.
- Explaining complex mortgage products, lender criteria and protection solutions in a clear and understandable manner.
- Researching and recommending suitable mortgage products from across the market based on client needs and circumstances.
- Advising clients on associated protection products including life insurance, critical illness cover, income protection and family protection arrangements where appropriate.
- Managing mortgage applications from initial enquiry through to completion, liaising with lenders, solicitors, estate agents and other third parties as required.
- Working closely with the James McKenzie Wills and Estate Planning teams to ensure clients receive a holistic and joined-up service where appropriate.
- Communicating efficiently with lenders, solicitors, estate agents, protection providers and the wider team.
- Conducting research and drawing from market updates, lender criteria and industry developments to provide the most suitable advice and recommendations.
- Able to interpret and apply technical mortgage and protection knowledge so that it applies to practical client solutions.
- Prioritising work so that deadlines, lender requirements and company SLAs can be met.
- Responsible for gathering and maintaining accurate and relevant client information, records and compliance documentation.
- Following up with clients after their initial meeting to obtain any outstanding information and answer any questions so that mortgage applications can progress efficiently.
- Updating CRM systems accurately and promptly.
- Producing technically accurate and compliant suitability documentation and recommendations.
- Answering client calls and emails within company SLAs.
- Monitoring applications throughout the underwriting process and proactively managing any issues that may arise.
- Supporting clients with the completion and submission of mortgage and protection applications.
- Supporting client education through presentations, webinars, employee benefit events and financial wellbeing initiatives.
- Regular attendance at client roadshows and employee engagement events to help promote awareness of mortgage and protection services.
- Regular regional client meetings. An overnight stay may be required.
- Diary management – review and maintain your diary weekly. Work closely with your Team Leader and support teams for cost-efficient travel and accommodation arrangements.
- Assist other areas of the business in peaks and quiet periods.
- Further development of knowledge and skills via additional external studies and qualifications may be required following successful completion of probation.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
