Senior Naval Architect - Permanent - Hampshire
Navis Consulting have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Naval Architect. The position would suit an outgoing and pragmatic Naval Architect leading a range of complex yacht design and naval architecture projects, including both new builds and refits. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with class and flag requirements, optimise hull form and structure, and provide technical support to junior staff. The role may involve interfacing with clients, shipyards, approval bodies and internal design teams to deliver high-quality, robust and efficient yacht solutions.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to naval architecture design tasks including preliminary design, hull-form development, stability and performance analysis.
- Support structural design activities, including strength assessments, scantling calculations and evaluation of structural integrity.
- Ensure compliance with classification society requirements, flag-state regulations, and relevant safety and environmental standards.
- Prepare and review stability documentation, including stability booklets, inclining trials, lightship surveys and damage-stability analyses.
- Carry out weight estimates, monitor weight development and maintain centre-of-gravity accuracy throughout design and construction.
- Assist with refit feasibility studies, assessing proposed modifications and their impact on performance, safety and regulatory compliance.
- Collaborate with shipyards, subcontractors and suppliers to monitor build quality, resolve technical issues and support construction oversight.
- Provide guidance to junior naval architects and designers, reviewing their work to ensure consistency with project standards.
- Participate in client meetings, contribute to proposal development and support technical communication as required.
- Stay informed on advancements in materials, hydrodynamics, computational tools and industry regulations.
- Follow internal processes and quality-assurance protocols, and contribute to continuous improvement of design workflows.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Yacht Design or a related field.
- Minimum four years’ experience in yacht design or naval architecture, including new builds and refits.
- Strong knowledge of classification societies and flag-state regulations, such as LR, ABS, RINA and DNV.
- Proficiency in industry-standard design software such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros and MaxSurf.
- Good understanding of marine systems, weight control and materials including composites, aluminium and steel.
- Awareness of superyacht fit-out detailing and integration.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across disciplines and engage confidently with clients.
- Willingness to travel to shipyards, attend sea trials and represent the company onsite when required.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Analytical mindset with effective problem-solving skills.
- Reliable, accountable and able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Collaborative approach and openness to new technologies.
- Ability to manage time effectively and prioritise tasks across multiple projects.
- Excellent technical report-writing skills.
