Senior Network Design Engineer – HS2
Location: UK / Hybrid
Project: HS2
Sector: Rail / Operational Telecommunications / Network Infrastructure
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Network Design Engineer to join a major rail infrastructure programme supporting the design and assurance of critical network, operational telecommunications and security systems for HS2.
This is a senior technical position combining network architecture, systems engineering, requirements management, design assurance and multidisciplinary interface coordination within one of Europe's largest infrastructure programmes.
You'll play a key role in developing secure, resilient and maintainable network and telecommunications solutions that interface with wider railway systems, including signalling, SCADA, station systems, control environments and operational infrastructure.
The Role
As Senior Network Design Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across network, telecommunications and security design activities, while also supporting wider network programmes.
You'll be involved throughout the design lifecycle, from system definition and architecture through to assurance, integration, testing and acceptance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of high- and low-level network architectures for secure, resilient operational environments.
- Provide technical leadership across network, operational telecommunications and security system design.
- Develop and assure IP/MPLS transmission networks within operational telecommunications environments.
- Support requirements management, compliance, traceability and technical assurance.
- Coordinate interfaces with Signalling, SCADA, M&E, station systems, security, civil infrastructure and other rail systems.
- Produce architecture diagrams, system descriptions, technical specifications, design reports and interface documentation.
- Define IP addressing, subnetting, network segmentation, resilience and cyber-security strategies.
- Support IDC, IDR and equivalent formal design review processes.
- Respond to technical comments and manage design close-out through to acceptance.
- Support system integration, testing, commissioning, migration and maintainability activities.
- Undertake Responsible Engineer or independent checking responsibilities where required.
- Apply CDM 2015 and Safe by Design principles throughout the design process.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
