Job Title: Senior Network Engineer

Type: Contractor

Location: Glasgow (hybrid)

Duration: 6-12 months initial

Vetting: SC security clearance or eligibility

The Senior Network Engineer will combine strong technical networking expertise with a proactive and consultative approach to ensure network services are designed, integrated, delivered, and operated to a high standard. The role will involve managing enterprise network infrastructure across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments, developing secure and resilient network services, and supporting business-critical operations.

In addition to maintaining operational service levels, you will be expected to translate technical and architectural designs into operational solutions, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and embed DevOps methodologies within the Network Engineering function.

A key focus of the role will be the adoption of Network Automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles, using technologies such as Ansible, Python, PowerShell, Git, REST APIs, and CI/CD pipelines to improve consistency, reduce operational risk, increase deployment velocity, and support self-service capabilities across the wider technology organisation.

Essential Skills

Network Engineering

  • Experience in a similar Senior Network Engineer role or as a technical infrastructure engineer with significant networking expertise within a complex enterprise environment.
  • Proven experience supporting and troubleshooting network environments to third-line level.
  • Experience with virtualised networking principles and platforms including VMware & Hyper-V.
  • Experience with a variety of routing, firewall, switching, wireless, and load-balancing technologies from multiple vendors.
  • Excellent understanding of networking concepts including:
    • TCP/IP
    • DHCP
    • DNS
    • VLANs
    • IPv4 and IPv6
    • NAT
    • QoS
    • IP Addressing
    • Variable Length Subnet Masking (VLSM)
    • Remote Access Technologies
    • Network Security Principles
  • Strong understanding of LAN, WAN, SD-WAN, and enterprise network design and implementation concepts.
  • Clear understanding of VPN technologies including IKE, IPSec, SSL VPNs, and routing protocols including OSPF and BGP.
  • Demonstrable experience in network capacity planning, network performance optimisation, and operational best practices.
  • Experience of network monitoring, alerting, and management platforms.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills across complex enterprise networks.
  • Experience implementing and managing network infrastructure in both on-premises and cloud-based environments.
  • Strong understanding of security controls relating to network infrastructure.
  • Experience managing network resilience, high-availability, and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Strong experience with network automation frameworks including Ansible.
  • Experience developing and maintaining Ansible playbooks, roles, inventories, and automation workflows.
  • Strong scripting experience using Python, PowerShell, Bash, or equivalent languages.
  • Experience integrating infrastructure management with Git-based version control systems such as GitHub, GitLab, or Azure DevOps.
  • Experience building or contributing to Infrastructure as Code solutions.
  • Experience with REST APIs, JSON, YAML, and automation-driven integrations.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD tooling and automated deployment pipelines.
  • Understanding of DevOps methodologies and applying DevOps principles within infrastructure and networking teams.
  • Experience implementing automated compliance validation, configuration management, and network assurance processes.
  • Familiarity with observability platforms, telemetry collection, logging, monitoring, and alerting frameworks.
  • Ability to identify manual operational processes and transform them into automated, repeatable solutions.
  • Working knowledge of Jira, Confluence, and IT Service Management processes including Incident, Problem, Change, and Risk Management.
  • Experience producing and maintaining technical documentation, standards, and operational procedures.
  • Experience working within structured governance and change-controlled environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
