Role Purpose:

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, security, performance, and resilience of the bank’s network infrastructure.

The role will provide senior-level technical expertise across LAN, WAN, wireless, firewalls, VPN, cloud networking, network security, and connectivity services. The successful candidate will ensure that network services are secure, highly available, resilient, scalable, and aligned with business and regulatory requirements.

The role will also provide technical leadership on network transformation projects, infrastructure upgrades, cloud adoption, operational resilience, and major technology initiatives.

Role Responsibilities:

Network Engineering & Infrastructure

  • Design, implement, configure, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure.
  • Manage LAN, WAN, WLAN, SD-WAN and Internet connectivity.
  • Configure and support enterprise routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers and VPN technologies.
  • Maintain network segmentation, VLANs, routing, switching and network access controls.
  • Ensure high availability and resilience across critical network services.
  • Monitor network capacity, performance and availability and proactively address potential issues.
  • Develop and maintain network architecture, topology and configuration documentation.
  • Perform network upgrades, migrations and technology refreshes with minimal business disruption.

Network Security

  • Implement and maintain secure network architectures in accordance with organisational security policies.
  • Configure and manage firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS and other network security technologies.
  • Support network segmentation and Zero Trust security initiatives.
  • Investigate and remediate network security vulnerabilities.
  • Participate in vulnerability assessments, penetration testing and remediation activities.
  • Ensure network configurations comply with security standards and regulatory requirements.

Cloud & Hybrid Networking

  • Design and support secure connectivity between on-premises infrastructure and cloud platforms.
  • Support networking within Microsoft Azure, AWS and/or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
  • Implement cloud VPNs, dedicated connectivity, routing, security groups and network segmentation.
  • Contribute to cloud migration and hybrid-cloud transformation programmes.

Operational Support

  • Provide Level 3 technical support for complex network incidents and problems.
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of major network incidents.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Participate in an on-call/standby support rota where required.
  • Manage network changes in accordance with ITIL and change-management processes.
  • Work with vendors and service providers to resolve complex technical issues.

Monitoring & Performance

  • Monitor network availability, latency, bandwidth utilisation and performance.
  • Use network monitoring and diagnostic tools to identify trends and potential failures.
  • Establish appropriate network performance and availability metrics.
  • Proactively optimise network performance and capacity.

Projects & Transformation

  • Provide senior engineering input into infrastructure and technology projects.
  • Lead or support network migrations, upgrades and infrastructure transformation initiatives.
  • Produce technical designs, implementation plans, test plans and rollback procedures.
  • Conduct technical assessments of new networking technologies and solutions.
  • Support disaster recovery, business continuity and operational resilience initiatives.

Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure network infrastructure complies with internal policies and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate network documentation, configurations, asset records and operational procedures.
  • Support internal and external audits.
  • Contribute to compliance with frameworks and standards such as ISO 27001, NIST, and DORA, where applicable.
  • Ensure appropriate controls are in place for network access, privileged access, logging and monitoring.

Technical Leadership

  • Act as a subject matter expert for enterprise networking.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
  • Review technical designs and proposed network changes.
  • Establish and promote engineering standards and best practices.
  • Work collaboratively with Infrastructure, Cloud, Applications, Service Desk and Project teams.

Skills Required:

  • 8+ years' experience in enterprise network engineering, with significant experience operating at a senior level.
  • Strong practical experience designing and supporting complex enterprise networks.
  • Extensive knowledge of routing, switching, firewalls and network security.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience supporting highly available and business-critical environments.
  • Experience with cloud and hybrid-cloud networking.
  • Experience working with third-party technology vendors and managed service providers.
  • Experience of network monitoring, performance management and capacity planning.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles and secure network design.
  • Experience working within structured change, incident and problem-management processes.
  • Excellent documentation and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and provide technical leadership to others.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Relevant degree in IT
  • Any relevant certification in Juniper, Cisco, CWNA or BCNE is an advantage
  • Experience with cloud networking and hybrid infrastructure.
  • VMware, Microsoft, or Citrix certification is desirable
  • Microsoft Azure Network Engineer certification
  • AWS networking certification
  • Oracle Cloud Infrastructure certification
  • Banking/Financial sector experience is an advantage

This is a permanent position, paying up to £85,000.00 based on experience.
