About The Role
Hackajob is collaborating with Tesco to connect them with exceptional professionals for this role.
As a Backend Development Engineer at Tesco, you will be an integral part of an agile team comprising industry-leading engineers tasked with defining and developing Tesco's Experience API (xAPI). This API is the backbone of Tesco's digital shopping experiences, powering various platforms such as mobile applications, in-store systems, and internal-facing applications. Your role will involve designing scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend systems that support millions of customers globally. You will work closely with product managers and other stakeholders to understand requirements, translate them into technical solutions, and implement features that enhance the overall customer experience. Your innovative approach and pragmatic mindset will be vital in creating maintainable and extensible software solutions that make a tangible difference in the retail landscape.
You will thrive in a collaborative environment, utilizing modern engineering practices and technologies such as JavaScript, Typescript, Node.js, GraphQL, REST, Kafka, Azure Cloud, Redis, Docker, and Kubernetes. Qualifications
We are seeking passionate and experienced backend developers who demonstrate a strong technical foundation and a desire to innovate. The ideal candidate will possess:
- 7+ years of professional experience as a backend software developer, with a focus on scalable, high-traffic systems.
- At least 4 years of hands-on experience in backend development using JavaScript, Typescript, Node.js, and related frameworks.
- Proficiency with JavaScript frameworks and libraries such as Next.js, React.js, and testing tools like Jest, Mocha.js, or Cucumber.
- Experience building and deploying microservices in cloud environments such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience developing GraphQL servers and working with GraphQL Federation, especially with Apollo Federation.
- Strong understanding of REST API development and distributed messaging systems like Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Familiarity with distributed caching technologies such as Redis.
- A commitment to writing clean, maintainable, modular, and well-documented code.
- Experience with DevOps practices, continuous integration, and automated testing methodologies like TDD, BDD, and performance testing.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively within an Agile team environment.
Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a passion for technology, a proactive approach to learning, and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deploy scalable backend systems using JavaScript, Typescript, Node.js, and cloud technologies.
- Collaborate with product managers to understand business requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
- Implement new features and extend existing software to enhance Tesco's digital shopping platforms.
- Write secure, maintainable, and high-quality code following best practices and coding standards.
- Automate deployment, testing, and monitoring processes to ensure continuous delivery and high system availability.
- Profile, optimize, and troubleshoot backend services to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Apply principles such as SOLID to create well-structured and modular software architectures.
- Refactor existing codebases to improve readability, maintainability, and scalability.
- Develop and execute test-driven development (TDD), behavior-driven development (BDD), and performance testing strategies.
- Support production systems by resolving incidents, performing root cause analysis, and implementing corrective actions.
- Share knowledge and mentor junior team members to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Produce proof of concepts to evaluate new tools, frameworks, or methodologies for potential integration.
- Participate in system design discussions and contribute to strategic technical decisions that align with business goals.
