Senior Node.js Software Engineer - Holepunch
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Node.js Software Engineer - Holepunch based in United Kingdom.
This is a senior engineering opportunity focused on building and evolving peer-to-peer technology and distributed systems.
You will develop and maintain a sophisticated P2P stack within a large ecosystem of modular, reusable software components.
The role offers the chance to work on production-scale Node.js applications with a strong emphasis on performance, reliability, and maintainability.
You will contribute to an ecosystem spanning more than 1,500 public npm modules and help expand its technical capabilities.
The position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex networking and distributed-systems challenges.
You will work alongside a globally distributed engineering team where autonomy, communication, and strong technical ownership are highly valued.
The opportunity also provides exposure to open-source development, decentralized technologies, and advanced networking concepts.
Accountabilities
- Develop, maintain, and enhance production-scale applications and services using Node.js.
- Build and evolve peer-to-peer technology and distributed-system components that support the broader software ecosystem.
- Design and implement modular, maintainable, and reusable code that can be leveraged across multiple projects and applications.
- Create, publish, maintain, and manage reusable npm modules while maintaining strong standards for quality and compatibility.
- Contribute to the ongoing expansion and improvement of a large ecosystem of modular software components.
- Develop comprehensive tests, troubleshoot issues, and debug applications to ensure reliability and production readiness.
- Investigate and resolve complex technical challenges related to networking, distributed systems, and P2P architectures.
- Identify opportunities to improve system performance, including latency, throughput, reliability, and resource efficiency.
- Collaborate effectively with engineers and technical contributors across a globally distributed, remote-first environment.
- Contribute to open-source projects and decentralized technology initiatives where appropriate.

Requirements
- Proven professional experience developing Node.js applications at production scale.
- Strong ability to write modular, maintainable, reliable, and reusable code.
- Hands-on experience creating, publishing, or managing reusable npm modules.
- Solid understanding of software testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and quality assurance practices.
- Strong interest in or professional experience with peer-to-peer technologies, distributed systems, or decentralized architectures.
- Ability to work independently while communicating clearly and effectively within a globally distributed engineering team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to investigate complex technical issues systematically.
- Experience with native Node.js extensions using C/C++ or connecting JavaScript applications with lower-level code is preferred.
- Experience optimizing network protocols or distributed systems for performance, including latency and throughput improvements, is preferred.
- Familiarity with advanced networking concepts is advantageous.
- Contributions to open-source software projects, particularly within P2P or decentralized technology communities, are a plus.
