Spectrum is recruiting a Substance Misuse specialist to lead our dedicated nursing team in Health and Justice.
To take forward our service, we’re looking for a nurse with excellent leadership skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders – from pharmacists and Heads of Healthcare to NHS providers and services.
You’ll be an effective and visible leader, providing robust clinical substance misuse support and operational guidance to all staff on matters relating to physical health and wellbeing within the prison setting. You’ll manage our skilled substance misuse team and be passionate about patient care - with advanced nursing knowledge, an understanding of NICE guidelines and a desire to be involved with key decision-making.
In Spectrum, we don’t believe in ‘standing still’; we want our leaders to challenge existing practice and have the courage to innovate for the good of our patients, so that we can keep on improving. Our substance misuse services are built around a holistic Recovery model.
Responsibilities
- Daily management of the Substance Misuse Service, including coordination of patient care and the provision of strong clinical leadership.
- Being involved with shift planning, taking appropriate action to adjust staffing levels and to prioritise the workload in accordance with patient need, service demand, and the availability of staff.
- Assessing, diagnosing, providing advice, and administering care to patients.
- Demonstrating knowledge, skills, and understanding of health issues and treatment options.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
