Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

Role Summary:
As a Paint Laboratory Technician working within the Building Construction Products (BCP) Paint Plant, you will be responsible for controlling and monitoring all Paint Plant processes.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the process tanks used for pre-treatment and electro-deposition by carrying out laboratory tests of tank samples. Make manual chemical additions or adjust dosing rates if necessary.
  • Monitor the plant equipment so that process temperatures, tank levels, and spray pressures are kept within the specified limits.
  • Maintain and upkeep the wastewater area and DI plants. This will include analysis of treated water.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping, safety, and environmental procedures are enforced.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks (i.e., filter changes, tank cleaning, and unblocking spray pipework) and liaise with the maintenance department to rectify any issues.
  • Record process data onto a database and carry out statistical analysis at the end of each month.
  • Test the properties of the finished paint surface. This will include measuring film thickness, gloss, and orange peel levels. Produce test panels to test for paint adhesion and hardness (internal check) and carry out corrosion testing (external check).
  • Replenish chemicals and other supplies. This includes maintenance of the material inventory.
  • Use a forklift truck to transport chemicals and waste products around the site.
  • Adhere to the Organisation's health & safety policy and safe working practices.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
