Job Description
If you have ever thought:
“I wish I could move away from templated suitability reports and spend my time understanding complex financial advice and communicating it beautifully.”
This role may have been designed for you.
We are looking for a career paraplanner who loves the technical side of financial planning:
- Understanding complicated client circumstances
- Modelling alternatives, challenging assumptions and then writing a report that makes the advice genuinely clear
This is not intended as a stepping stone to becoming a financial adviser.
About Barnaby Cecil
Barnaby Cecil is an independent financial-planning firm working principally with senior doctors with substantial private practices and US-connected technology executives living in the UK.
Our clients can have complicated pensions, businesses, investments, property, shareholdings, tax positions and competing financial objectives.
Our WealthMap® process puts the financial plan at the centre:
- Forecast – understand where the client is heading.
- Customise – explore the choices and trade-offs.
- Optimise – agree and implement the strategy.
How we work
We work collaboratively on every client.
Our model is two advisers, one client, supported by the wider planning team. Important cases are discussed together. We challenge assumptions, explore alternatives and collectively reach the planning recommendation.
The paraplanner is part of that process, not somebody who receives a file at the end of it.
By the time you write the report, you should know the client. You should understand their family, their circumstances, what matters to them, the alternatives we considered and why we reached the recommendation we did.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
Graduate Consultant — 2026 Scheme
Why you're a good match
StrongYour economics background and your summer at a regional bank line up with what PwC looks for on the consulting scheme. Applications close in four weeks.
See breakdownIt searches the market for you
Every day your agent scans the market matching roles against what actually matters to you, not just keywords on a CV.
Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Your job is then to articulate that advice beautifully.
The finished report should reflect the thought, detail and professional judgement that the whole team has put into the planning process.
The role
Your work will include:
- Building and updating complex CashCalc models
- Comparing alternative planning scenarios
- Using Timeline to support investment analysis
- Technical calculations and research
- Identifying gaps, contradictions or weak assumptions
- Writing personalised suitability and annual review reports
- Helping us continually improve our reporting systems and processes
This is not primarily an administrative role.
You will not spend your day arranging meetings or routinely chasing providers.
We want you focused on planning, modelling, analysis and writing.
Reports written for one person
We do not want reports assembled from a library of standard paragraphs.
Templates can provide structure, but the finished report should feel as though a skilled professional has written it specifically for the person reading it.
We continually ask whether something helps the client understand the advice, demonstrates our professional judgement or is genuinely required.
If it does not, it probably does not belong in the report.
Our ambition is to make reports shorter, clearer and better, not progressively longer.
Technology and AI
We expect you to use technology and AI intelligently.
It can accelerate research, interrogate information, structure drafts and improve productivity. But you remain responsible for the technical accuracy, judgement and final language.

Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
AI should make you faster. It should not make your writing sound like AI.
Who we are looking for
You are likely to:
- Be an experienced paraplanner and excellent report writer
- Hold at least the Level 4 Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning
- Have strong CashCalc experience
- Enjoy technical research, calculations and scenario modelling
- Ideally have experience with Timeline
- Write naturally, precisely and with empathy
- Question information that does not make sense
- Be interested in AI, automation and better ways of working
- Want to develop as a technical expert rather than move into a conventional adviser role
You do not need to be the loudest person in the room.
You do need to be curious, exacting and dependable, and take real satisfaction from explaining a complicated situation beautifully.
A technical career with influence
This is a role with room to grow.
Over time, you could become the firm's authority on planning production, report quality, cashflow modelling and the intelligent application of technology.
You will have a meaningful voice in how WealthMap® develops and how we deliver financial planning as the business grows.
Applying
Please apply through LinkedIn.
We will use a two-stage recruitment process designed to understand how you think, how you approach complex financial-planning problems and, importantly, how well you communicate advice in writing.
We care much more about the quality of your thinking and writing than polished interview answers.
“It took my CV and asked me questions relevant to understanding what kind of jobs to suggest for me. Suggestions were almost perfect. Jobs were exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
