Senior Payments Consultant

We are recruiting on behalf of a payments business for a Senior Payments Consultant with strong technical knowledge, analytical skills, and commercial judgement.
In this client-facing role, you will help businesses understand how their payments are performing, identify opportunities to improve acceptance and reduce costs, and build evidence-based recommendations. You will need to be comfortable working with detailed transaction data and explaining your findings to senior decision-makers.
Key Responsibilities
Assess Payment Performance
- Lead client discussions to understand their payment arrangements, commercial priorities, and operational challenges.
- Analyse transaction data, merchant statements, and processing costs to establish a clear picture of current performance.
- Review acquiring arrangements, interchange and scheme fees, payment methods, authentication, and foreign exchange costs.
- Compare performance with relevant market benchmarks and identify areas requiring further investigation.
Identify and Evaluate Improvements
- Investigate authorisation rates and decline patterns to identify opportunities to increase successful payments.
- Assess opportunities to optimise payment fees, improve authentication outcomes, and reduce avoidable costs.
- Quantify the potential impact of proposed changes, distinguishing realistic improvements from unsupported assumptions.
- Prioritise recommendations according to their commercial value and practical feasibility.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
