The Vacancy
Join NCHA and Make a Difference
At NCHA, we're committed to providing excellent services to our communities, and that starts with supporting our colleagues. We're looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Payroll Officer to join our Finance team and play a key role in delivering an accurate, efficient, and compliant payroll service across the organisation.
This is an exciting opportunity for a payroll professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, solving complex payroll issues, and supporting continuous improvement while ensuring colleagues are paid accurately and on time.
About The Role
As our Senior Payroll Officer, you will lead and support the delivery of end-to-end payroll services for the NCHA Group. You'll be responsible for ensuring payroll processes are accurate, compliant, and delivered within strict deadlines, while acting as a subject matter expert on payroll legislation, pensions, statutory payments, and taxation.
Working closely with colleagues across Finance, HR, and external providers, you'll help maintain robust payroll controls, support audits and reporting requirements, and contribute to ongoing system and process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain all NCHA Group payroll and pension systems and records, including colleague expenses, statutory payments, and absence-related payments.
- Process payroll accurately and in accordance with current legislation, HMRC requirements, and organisational policies.
- Operate and reconcile payroll control accounts, including net pay and pension accounts, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and perform regular reconciliations, taking corrective action where necessary.
- Extract, analyse, and report on payroll and financial data to support organisational reporting requirements.
- Support monthly, period-end, and year-end payroll activities, ensuring all statutory and regulatory deadlines are met.
- Resolve complex payroll queries and discrepancies, providing expert advice and guidance to colleagues and stakeholders.
- Assist in the preparation of statutory returns, financial reports, and audit requirements.
- Support payroll system enhancements, process improvements, and the development of procedure manuals.
- Monitor legislative changes and ensure compliance across all payroll activities.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide support and cover across the wider Finance Directorate when required.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
