About The Role

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior PHP Developer to join our client's dynamic engineering team based in Hertfordshire. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work within a well-established technology business that develops large-scale web applications and platform solutions. As a key member of the development team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining critical web-based systems that support the company's core operations. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including QA, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver robust, scalable, and secure solutions. This position is hybrid, requiring two days onsite, providing the flexibility to balance collaborative work and remote productivity.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in PHP development, with extensive experience working in a non-framework environment. You should have a solid understanding of relational databases such as MySQL or MariaDB, along with proficiency in front-end technologies including HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. Experience working within Linux-based development environments is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a good grasp of secure coding principles, software engineering best practices, and system performance optimisation. A proven track record of designing scalable systems and troubleshooting complex issues is highly desirable. Additional skills in caching, distributed storage, CI/CD processes, and familiarity with large-scale web platforms will be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance PHP-based web applications to meet evolving business needs.
  • Write clean, secure, and scalable code following industry best practices and coding standards.
  • Design and optimise database schemas, queries, and application performance to ensure efficiency and reliability.
  • Create new features and improve existing functionalities across various platforms.
  • Participate in code reviews, testing, and quality assurance activities to uphold high-quality standards.
  • Engage with stakeholders to gather requirements, provide technical insights, and deliver tailored solutions.
  • Investigate and resolve application and production issues promptly to minimise downtime.
  • Produce comprehensive technical documentation and contribute to architectural decision-making processes.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, including refactoring, automation, and process optimisation.
  • Collaborate effectively with developers, QA teams, and support functions to ensure successful project delivery and deployment.
