Senior Planner – Water Infrastructure
Location: South West / Hybrid Working
Framework: South West Water
Employment Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Salary: £65,000 – £80,000 + Car Allowance
Working Arrangement: Hybrid, with occasional travel to projects across the South West
The Opportunity
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Planner to support the delivery of a major long-term water infrastructure programme across the South West.
This is an excellent opportunity for an established Planner to join a major UK infrastructure contractor delivering a significant programme of works for South West Water.
The position offers a high degree of hybrid and flexible working. You will not be expected to be permanently based in Exeter, although occasional travel to the framework, project sites, and meetings across the South West will be required as and when necessary.
The role will provide planning, programming, project controls, and methodology expertise across both pre-construction and live project environments.
The Role
As Senior Planner, you will work closely with operational, commercial, design, and project teams to develop robust and deliverable programmes that support successful project delivery.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading planning and programming activities across water and infrastructure projects
- Developing and maintaining detailed project programmes using Primavera P6 and Asta Powerproject
- Producing resource-loaded and cost-loaded programmes
- Developing construction methodologies, sequencing strategies, and phasing plans
- Supporting prequalification, tender, and pre-construction activities
- Monitoring project progress against agreed programmes
- Undertaking critical path analysis and identifying programme risks
- Developing mitigation strategies and programme recovery solutions
- Implementing Short Interval Control and 5-Week Look Ahead planning
- Producing accurate programme reporting for project and senior management teams
- Working alongside commercial teams to ensure programmes support contractual requirements
- Supporting resource forecasting and productivity monitoring
- Identifying programme risks, opportunities, and potential efficiencies
- Collaborating with clients, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary project teams

About You
We are looking for an experienced planning professional with a strong understanding of major construction and infrastructure delivery.
Previous experience within the water sector would be highly advantageous, although applications are also welcomed from experienced Planners working across civil engineering, utilities, or major infrastructure environments.
Ideally, you will have:
- Significant experience working within a Planner or Senior Planner position
- Strong knowledge of Primavera P6 and/or Asta Powerproject
- Experience developing and managing detailed construction programmes
- Knowledge of resource and cost-loaded programming
- Experience with critical path analysis and programme recovery
- Good understanding of NEC contracts and NEC-compliant programmes
- Strong knowledge of construction methodologies and project controls
- Experience with Short Interval Control, Look Ahead Planning, and Lean Planning techniques
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to work effectively across operational, commercial, and design functions
- Membership of a professional institution such as CIOB, ICE, or APM, or progress towards professional membership, would be advantageous.

Hybrid Working
This position offers considerable flexibility for the right individual. While the framework operates across the South West Water region, there is no requirement to be permanently based in Exeter.
The successful Senior Planner will be able to work on a hybrid basis, with travel to project locations, offices, and framework meetings required only when necessary. This could therefore suit an experienced Planner living outside the immediate South West who is comfortable travelling into the region periodically.
