Job Title: Senior Planner
Location: Derby
Contract: initially 12 Months inside ir35 – option for permanent
Hybrid: 2-3 days onsite required
Requirements: Sole British & SC Clearance
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Planner to lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of integrated programme and project schedules within complex engineering and infrastructure environments. The successful candidate will provide expert planning, scheduling, forecasting, and project controls support, ensuring robust programme delivery across multidisciplinary teams.
This role requires strong Primavera P6 expertise, NEC contract experience, and the ability to influence project outcomes through data-driven insights and effective stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of integrated programme and project schedules.
- Establish and manage planning baselines, critical paths, milestones, and key delivery dependencies.
- Produce, manage, and maintain detailed project schedules for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate work packages, resource planning activities, and subcontractor programmes to ensure alignment with overall project delivery objectives.
- Review, challenge, and approve subcontractor schedules and programme submissions.
- Monitor and track project progress against approved schedules, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
- Provide schedule analysis, forecasting, critical path assessments, and performance reporting to support programme delivery.
- Identify, assess, and communicate schedule risks, opportunities, and emerging issues, recommending mitigation and recovery strategies.
- Support project and programme governance through the preparation and presentation of planning reports, metrics, and insights to senior stakeholders and leadership teams.
- Lead scenario planning and schedule optimisation exercises to support strategic decision-making.
- Assess change impacts on project schedules and maintain accurate programme forecasts.
- Interface with clients, project teams, subcontractors, and key stakeholders to communicate progress, risks, opportunities, and change impacts.
- Contribute to project proposals through planning input, resource forecasting, and manhour estimating.
- Ensure planning processes, methodologies, and project controls standards are applied consistently across all assigned projects.
- Collaborate with engineering, procurement, manufacturing, licensing, construction, and commercial teams to ensure coordinated programme delivery.
- Mentor and support junior planners and project controls personnel, promoting planning best practice throughout the organisation.

Essential Skills & Attributes
- Advanced planning, scheduling, and project controls expertise.
- Primavera P6 proficiency to intermediate level or above (essential).
- Strong understanding and practical experience of NEC contracts, including NEC4 Option A and Option C (essential).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex project data.
- Strong capability in critical path analysis, earned value reporting, forecasting, and performance measurement.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and Microsoft Project.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including engagement with senior leadership teams.
- Ability to confidently challenge and review subcontractor programmes and submissions.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and meet demanding deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality planning standards.
- Proactive, collaborative, and delivery-focused approach.
- Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.

Qualifications
Essential
- Degree-qualified, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
- Primavera P6 training and practical application experience.
- Proven experience in project planning and scheduling within complex project environments.
Desirable
- Project Management qualification such as APM, PRINCE2, PMP, or equivalent.
- Professional membership of a recognised project management or project controls institution.
Experience
Essential
- Significant experience as a Project Planner or Senior Planner on NEC4 contracts.
- Experience producing and managing integrated project schedules using Primavera P6.
- Experience delivering planning and project controls services within complex engineering, construction, or infrastructure projects.
Highly Desirable
- Experience within the Nuclear, Defence, Energy, or other highly regulated sectors.
- Major infrastructure design-and-build project experience.
- Experience supporting large-scale programmes involving multiple contractors and stakeholders.
