About the Team
The Planning team consists of around 85 people, split between our London and Edinburgh offices, with 25 specialising in the Housing and Land Planning team based in London.
Our teams advise clients—ranging from private developers to public sector entities—such as Barratt, London Square, Regal, Taylor Wimpey, NHS, Defra, and MoD. We deliver residential-led planning advice and have secured permission for over 70,000 homes in the past three years.

Role Overview
The Senior Planner – Housing and Land will play a key support role to the partners in the team, driving both individual and team growth. The successful candidate will:
- Support and advise partners in the Housing and Land team;
- Identify and pursue business opportunities to grow the team;
- Take initiative in resolving project and client challenges efficiently;
- Manage and develop your own performance and that of junior colleagues, ensuring effective delegation;
- Stay up to date on market, legislative, and best practice developments;
- Collaborate with other departments to expand business opportunities;
- Maintain and develop existing client relationships to secure repeat business independently or within a team.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Housing and Land, your role includes:
Client Liaison & Deliverables
- Provide direct client advice on planning matters;
- Manage junior staff to deliver high-quality advice and support for clients;
- Identify and lead new business opportunities;
- Assist the team with client meetings, facilitating discussions and advice determination.
Planning Strategies & Projects
- Develop comprehensive planning strategies, including programmes and transparent risk assessment reports;
- Coordinate and review planning applications, appeals, and representations;
- Prepare and submit reports, applications, and administrative submissions for clients.

Business Development & Commercial Strategy
- Pitch for new business, including fee proposals and commercial strategy discussions;
- Develop individual client relationships to ensure a steady flow of projects;
- Represent and support partners and clients in meetings and negotiations.
Team Leadership & Professional Development
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior colleagues;
- Foster a culture of continuous professional development (CPD) for yourself and the team;

Qualifications & Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- RTPI qualification (required);
- Proven track record as a strong communicator—both written and verbal—ability to advise clearly at all levels;
- Inclusive approach with experience collaboratively delivering planning advice and managing multidisciplinary teams;
- High-standard service delivery and ability to prioritise effectively;
- Characteristics of an independent thinker and player who can work autonomously, intelligently and with commercial acumen;
- UK-based practice, preferably England-focused with relevant residential-led planning experience.
Note: This position is based in Montagu Evans London.
