Costain - Senior Planner Role

Costain has secured significant work in the water sector to support the AMP 8 investment cycle.

We have been appointed by United Utilities as one of 7 partners to the Enterprise, delivering £5.5bn of projects in the Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8) between 2025 – 2030, and AMP 9 (2030 – 2035). Our scope is to provide project management, design, construction, and commissioning services on design and build schemes throughout the North West and Cumbria region covered by United Utilities. Projects vary in value, covering both infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets on water and wastewater sites with wider Enterprise partners.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Planning Lead, the Senior Planner will be responsible for ensuring the projects are kept on track by updating and maintaining the project programme. Initially the role will be in the pre-construction phase, monitoring the design programme and developing the delivery programme with the design information as it becomes available. The programme would continue to be maintained through the delivery phase through to handover and closedown. This role is based on our Sale project and site presence is required 3 days a week minimum.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare robust tender and contract programmes using the designated planning tool, that link design, procurement, construction, installation, commissioning, and handover, in line with the project life cycle.
  • Display and analyse the project Critical Path and advise the project team (including the client) of the results and any appropriate corrective action.
  • Produce/maintain project baselines and execute change control process as appropriate.
  • Correctly record project progress in the programme, reschedule programme to take effect of the progress data, and communicate the results to the project team and advise of any appropriate corrective action.
  • Produce programmes that satisfy contractual requirements.
  • All programmes and documentation to be produced to company practices and procedures.
  • Manage several programmes and support Planning Engineers/Junior Planning Engineers including supervision and checking of work to ensure that all work complies with company standards and procedures.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
