Senior Planner (Client Side)
North London | National Grid HWUP Programme | Contract | £600 per day (Inside IR35) | Hybrid Working (3 Days Site Based)
Are you an experienced Senior Planner looking for the opportunity to work on one of National Grid's major power infrastructure programmes whilst operating in a client-side capacity?
We're supporting a client on the Hackney to Walthamstow Upgrade Programme (HWUP), a significant investment programme involving overhead line works, substation upgrades and associated network infrastructure across North London.
They are looking to appoint an experienced Senior Planner to join the programme team and act as the client's planning representative across multiple workstreams and contractor interfaces.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Planner with a strong background in high-voltage power transmission, substations or major infrastructure projects to move into a client-side role where you will oversee programme performance, challenge contractor schedules and provide assurance that works are being delivered in line with programme objectives.
Unlike a traditional contractor planning position, this role focuses on programme oversight, governance and interface management across multiple contractors and stakeholders. You'll play a key role in ensuring programmes are realistic, risks are understood and delivery teams remain aligned throughout the project lifecycle.
The position offers hybrid working, with approximately three days per week spent across project locations including Walthamstow, Tottenham and Brimsdown.

The Role
You will be responsible for:
- Representing National Grid as the client-side planning lead across key elements of the HWUP programme
- Reviewing, challenging and assuring contractor programmes to ensure they are realistic, robust and aligned to programme objectives
- Monitoring progress against key milestones and identifying risks to successful project delivery
- Managing programme interfaces across multiple contractors, work packages and stakeholders
- Supporting the coordination of overhead line, substation and wider network infrastructure activities
- Undertaking critical path analysis and providing insight into programme risks, opportunities and recovery strategies
- Assessing the programme impact of change, emerging risks and delivery constraints
- Producing programme reports, dashboards and performance updates for senior stakeholders
- Facilitating programme review meetings and planning workshops
- Ensuring consistency of planning standards, reporting and programme governance across the project
- Working closely with project managers, engineers and delivery partners to drive successful project outcomes
What We're Looking For
We're keen to speak with experienced Senior Planners who can demonstrate:
- Strong planning experience within the power transmission, utilities, energy or major infrastructure sectors
- Previous experience working on National Grid, transmission, substation or overhead line projects would be highly advantageous
- A strong understanding of contractor programme management and programme assurance
- Experience working in a client-side, consultancy or oversight capacity, or the ability to transition successfully from a contractor environment
- Excellent Primavera P6 planning skills
- Strong understanding of programme interfaces, sequencing and risk management
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- The confidence to challenge delivery teams and influence programme outcomes
- Experience coordinating multiple contractors across complex infrastructure environments
