Job Summary
We are MHCLG
Do you want to make buildings safer for people to use? Can you solve challenging problems and become an expert in your field? If so, we’d love to hear from you! The Grenfell Tower Inquiry represented a sea change in the way we regulate the built environment, and we must learn from the lessons of the Grenfell Tower fire to make sure the mistakes highlighted by the Inquiry are never repeated.
Over 3 million premises in England require a fire risk assessment in order for them to be used. Since 2006, there have been no formal requirements for becoming a fire risk assessor, which has resulted in highly variable standards of professional competency. Reforming the fire risk assessor role is both a Grenfell Inquiry recommendation and a government strategic priority.
This is an extremely rare opportunity to take a direct role in the creation a brand-new regulated profession. You will play a direct part in defining the fire risk assessor profession and ensuring that it effectively meets the professional needs of fire risk assessors, the commercial needs of the businesses that employ them, as well as the safety of all those who may be affected by their work.
The fire risk assessor programme sits within the Fire Directorate of the Buildings Fire and Resilience Group. We are a supportive team with a strong commitment to personal development, learning and career progression

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
