Job Description

As a Senior Portfolio Manager, you will have experience working closely with Portfolio Directors, client leadership teams and project teams to deliver best-in-class Portfolio and Portfolio Management Office services for global/national/regional portfolios.

You understand the focus on converting strategy into delivery, optimising portfolio performance, driving strategic capital planning and driving sustained success against annual portfolio objectives.

You drive efficient and effective delivery through the implementation of robust, standardised and integrated ways of working that enable successful portfolio outcomes. You play a key role in establishing and maintaining portfolio governance, performance management and assurance frameworks, ensuring high-quality reporting, data integrity and effective financial oversight. Acting as a trusted partner to portfolio leadership, you provide visibility, challenge and insight into portfolio performance, helping to identify risks, drive informed decision-making and support the delivery of strategic objectives.

As the critical link between project delivery teams, portfolio leadership and the wider business, you ensure alignment, accountability and consistency across all aspects of delivery. Through the application of Portfolio and Portfolio Management Office best practice, you drive compliance, continuous improvement and operational excellence and leadership, directly contributing to successful commission performance, a strategically aligned, competitive portfolio, and client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Portfolio Delivery, Governance & Control: Effectively deliver as part of high-performing teams, motivating and leading by example, to embed, govern and assure portfolio management frameworks and control processes. Operationally lead the successful execution of small to medium scale transformation/real estate Portfolios and Portfolio Management Offices, and materially impact the delivery of large-scale Portfolios and Portfolio Management Offices, ensuring measurable benefits. Drive adherence to governance, contractual deliverables, and risk-management requirements. Maintain RAID logs, registers, trackers, and reporting mechanisms to a high-quality standard. Work effectively with internal and client leads as required to support the direction and sustained strategic performance and business value across the portfolio.
  • Information and Data Leveraging: Implement and oversee effective reporting cycles, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and data integrity. Leverage data analytics to provide real-time insights into programme performance, enabling confident decision-making.
  • Continuous Improvement and Learning: Improve programme efficiencies and transform programme performance by identifying and owning the end-to-end implementation of continuous improvement initiatives. Embed portfolio management and control frameworks to ensure rigor, compliance, transparency, and continuous improvement.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Communication: Establish and maintain trusted relationships with senior leaders, clients and key stakeholders, building a reputation as a collaborative & trusted delivery partner. Establish and embed robust processes for engaging and managing programme stakeholders through an effective stakeholder management plan. Foster effective and strong partnerships and successfully communicate across stakeholder groups. Create professional presentations and status reports for leadership and governance forums.
  • Financial & Contract Support: Proactively drive processes related to financial monitoring, budget updates, and cost reporting. Take initiative in coordinating procurement and contract administration activities as needed.
  • Risk, Health & Safety Considerations: Lead on the identification of programme risks and integration of appropriate safeguards, including health and safety.
  • People & Team: Act as a first-class colleague, taking a lead and positively contributing to the culture of internal and commission teams and demonstrating leadership in internal team growth. Promote a collaborative culture focused on high performance, innovation and continuous learning and our One Business culture.

Qualifications

This is a Senior Professional level role. To excel in this role, you will have:

  • Proven experience in portfolios or programmes, preferably in the Real Estate, Infrastructure or Capital Projects sectors.
  • Demonstrable ability to operate effectively within fast-paced, high-profile delivery environments, applying strong organisational skills, attention to detail and sound judgement to manage competing priorities.
  • Strong understanding of portfolio, programme and project management methodologies, governance frameworks and controls, with relevant accreditation or practical application of recognised standards (e.g. MSP, PRINCE2, P3O, APM).
  • Team leadership experience, including multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience establishing and maintaining portfolio or programme controls, including RAID management, action tracking, change control, dependency management, governance processes and assurance activities.
  • Advanced analytical and reporting capabilities, with experience interpreting portfolio or programme performance data, monitoring KPIs, producing executive-level reporting and developing management dashboards that support informed decision-making.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly and credibly to a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills including experience in working with senior level stakeholders, demonstrating the ability to effectively engage, collaborate, challenge and build trust to realise successful programme outcomes.
  • Experience in leading portfolio or programme financial management activities, including forecasting, budgeting, performance reporting and financial governance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and programme management tools, reporting systems and digital platforms, with a proactive approach to data, innovation and technology adoption.
  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in a relevant field; professional membership (e.g. MSP) desirable.
