Senior Power Electronics & Motor Test Engineer
Reading | On-site | Permanent
I’m partnering with a rapidly growing engineering business developing high-performance electric propulsion technology for demanding applications.
As the company moves through its next stage of growth, they’re looking for an experienced engineer to take a leading role in developing their power electronics and electric motor testing capability.
This is a hands-on position with significant autonomy. Rather than simply executing predefined test procedures, you'll help determine the testing strategy, develop the rigs and instrumentation, select equipment and generate the performance data used to influence future product development.
The role will include:
- Performance and efficiency testing of power electronics and electric drive systems
- Thermal, electrical and loss characterisation across different operating conditions
- Designing and building bespoke test rigs, fixtures and instrumentation
- Selecting and commissioning specialist test and measurement equipment
- Developing automated testing and data acquisition using Python, LabVIEW or similar
- Expanding testing into electric motors, including torque, speed, efficiency, thermal and endurance testing
- Establishing robust approaches to calibration, measurement accuracy and repeatability
- Supporting product validation and qualification programmes
- Helping develop the company's wider engineering test capability as the product range grows

What we're looking for: You'll have strong experience within power electronics, electric drives, electric motors or another closely related electromechanical environment, combined with genuinely hands-on test and measurement experience.
You'll be comfortable working with equipment such as oscilloscopes, current probes, power analysers and data acquisition systems, and ideally have experience designing or modifying your own test setups.

You don't need to be an expert in both power electronics and motor testing. Strong technical depth in one, combined with an interest in developing the other, could be a great fit.
Backgrounds across aerospace, automotive/e-mobility, motorsport, robotics, advanced manufacturing or industrial drives could all be relevant.
This would particularly suit someone who enjoys combining hands-on engineering with technical ownership and wants the opportunity to shape a testing capability rather than inherit an established one.
