About Us

National Grid is hiring a Senior Power System Engineer - This position is based from our Warwick office however we offer flexible hybrid working options.

You will develop into a highly capable transmission planning engineer, building expertise in strategic network assessment, system modelling, and Net Zero network development while contributing to some of the most significant transmission investment decisions in Great Britain.

Job Purpose

As a Senior Power System Engineer within the Net Zero Engineering team, you will lead the technical assessment of future electricity transmission network requirements to support the decarbonisation of Great Britain's energy system. You will play a key role in identifying network needs, assessing system capability, developing innovative solutions, and providing robust engineering evidence to inform major transmission investment decisions.

Working across National Grid Electricity Transmission, NESO, customers, regulators, and industry stakeholders, you will lead strategic studies that support long-term network development, enabling the integration of renewable generation, large-scale demand growth, electrification, and emerging technologies.

You will combine advanced power system engineering expertise, modelling, analytics, and strategic thinking to ensure the future network can deliver Net Zero outcomes safely, efficiently, and economically.

What You'll Do

  • Lead strategic network planning studies to identify future transmission system needs and reinforcement requirements.
  • Lead boundary capability assessments and transfer capability studies to assess future network constraints and opportunities.
  • Develop technical recommendations to support transmission investment decisions and business cases.
  • Assess the impact of generation, storage, demand growth, data centres, hydrogen, electrification, and emerging technologies on transmission system capability.
  • Develop, model and evaluate innovative network solutions, including topology optimisation, flexibility services, HVDC, FACTS, and other system-wide interventions.
  • Translate complex technical analysis into clear strategic recommendations for senior stakeholders.
  • Lead development of modelling methodologies, analytical tools, and data-driven approaches to network planning.
  • Provide technical leadership for innovation projects relating to future network operation and Net Zero delivery.
  • Build strong relationships across National Grid, NESO, Ofgem, customers, and wider industry organisations.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, supporting capability development across the team.
  • Champion engineering excellence, governance, and compliance with industry standards and licence obligations.

Essential

About You

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in transmission planning, strategic network planning, system studies, or power system analysis.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Power system analysis and modelling.
    • Transmission planning methodologies.
    • Boundary capability and transfer assessments.
    • Network investment appraisal and cost-benefit assessment.
    • Future energy scenarios and system planning processes.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • NETS SQSS
    • Grid Code
    • CUSC
    • Relevant transmission planning standards
  • Experience using power system analysis tools such as PowerFactory, PSS®E, PSCAD, or equivalent.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Experience in tCSNP, ETYS, NOA, SSEP, CSNP, or similar network planning processes.
  • Experience in Python, DPL, optimisation techniques, data analytics, or automation.
  • Knowledge of probabilistic assessment techniques and Monte Carlo analysis.
  • Understanding of HVDC, FACTS, power electronics-dominated networks, and system operability challenges.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards Chartered status.

A competitive salary dependent on capability

Plus Market Supplement Annual £4,500

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
