Company Description
Heatons is a multi-disciplinary planning, ecology and geology company. Heatons is known for its client-focused approach and values providing honest and accurate advice to all clients across BNG banking/ecology enhancements, residential, commercial, minerals, waste, and renewables.
Key Responsibilities (these are dependent on grade)
- Manage ecological projects from inception through planning, design, construction and post-construction monitoring.
- Lead and undertake ecological surveys, including:
- Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA)
- UKHab habitat surveys and BNG condition assessments
- Protected species surveys
- Prepare and review technical reports including:
- Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA)
- Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)
- Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments
- Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans (HMMP)
- Biodiversity Gain Plans (BGP)
- CEMP (Construction Environmental Management Plans)
- Protected species mitigation strategies.
- Advise clients, project managers and multidisciplinary teams on ecological constraints, mitigation and enhancement opportunities.
- Ensure projects comply with relevant UK wildlife legislation, planning policy and environmental standards.
- Manage project budgets, programmes, resources and subcontractors to deliver work on time and within budget.
- Managing the team’s time recording and responsible for client invoicing.
- Liaise with planning authorities, statutory consultees, contractors and other stakeholders.
- Produce high-quality GIS mapping and ecological data outputs.
- Identify project risks early and develop practical ecological solutions.
- Mentor, supervise and support the other ecologists in the team, providing technical guidance and quality assurance.
- Contribute to business development through proposal writing, client relationship management and identifying new opportunities.

Essential Requirements (dependent on grade)
- Full UK driving licence
- Significant professional experience in ecological consultancy or environmental management.
- Ecological assessment and field work skills and experience including EcIA
- Strong knowledge of UK wildlife legislation, planning policy and ecological survey methodologies.
- Strong report writing / technical review and GIS (QGIS) abilities
- Previous experience in ecological consultancy
- Good project management skills and demonstrable experience (including production of quotes/tenders, tracking project milestones and deadlines and ideally experience with invoicing).
- Experience with managing a team and mentoring other team members
- Experience liaising with clients and providing pragmatic and ecologically sound advice across a wide range of situations.
- Associate or Full membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or working towards Chartered Ecologist status.

- Flexible/hybrid working, 3 days in the office/2 days WFH (both being survey dependent)

Salary Brackets
- Senior: £33.5K - £43K
- Principal: £42K - £52K
- Associate Director: £50K - £65K
