About The Opportunity

Amentum are recruiting a Senior / Principal Engineering Design Substantiation Engineer (EDS) to author Substantiation Reports which will underpin the design of the various process systems. You will work with cross-discipline teams, ensure safety case alignment, and liaise with suppliers and stakeholders. Candidates should possess substantial design engineering experience and familiarity with safety case methodologies and documentation.

Hybrid work is available, but may require visits to Chorley, Wolverhampton, Aldermaston and Twyford, with the main location being either Chorley or Aldermaston.

Amentum is currently producing the design of the Process Plant and Equipment (PP&E) to deliver an enduring manufacturing capability for a key customer in the defence industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Authoring mainly mechanical, nuclear substantiation documentation, Design Substantiation Reports (DSR) which provide the assurance and evidence to support approval of the facilities Safety Case.
  • Interrogating the Engineering Schedule and evidencing claims, Specific Safety Functional Requirements (SSFR), made against Systems, Structures, and Components (SSC) in the documentation.
  • Reviewing Safety Case and suppliers’ documentation and identifying potential shortfalls in the design or substantive evidence that will either prevent an SSFR being substantiated or require significant investment to provide the required substantiation.
  • Liaising with both internal and external designers and equipment vendors to gather information.
  • Interfacing with other stakeholders such as Human Factors, Fire Safety, Criticality, Radiological and the client Technical Authority.

Here's What You'll Need

  • Questioning attitude, confident to challenge information where needed.
  • Ability to guide both internal and external designers to the level and standard required to achieve substantiation of an SSFR.
  • Several years’ experience in design substantiation and safety case involvement for highly regulated industries, including the authoring of DSRs (or equivalent).
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including presentation and report writing.
  • Degree with honours in a related subject (or equivalent)
  • Chartered Engineer Status or equivalent (or working towards).
