About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior/Principal Hydraulic Modeller to lead and expand our Bristol team. As part of AECOM’s UK hub for hydraulic modelling, you’ll drive forward our flood risk and water resource projects while mentoring the next generation of water professionals.

Job Title: Senior/Principal Hydraulic Modeller (Permanent)

Location: AECOM Bristol Office – Hybrid Working Department: Water Resources, UK & Ireland (DCS Group) Industry: Environmental, Sustainable Design and Planning

Unique Opportunities

  • Lead high-impact, nationwide hydraulic modelling projects, addressing critical challenges like fluvial, surface water, and tidal flooding, supported by 1D-2D modelling, Flood Risk Assessements (FRAs), and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).

As Senior/Principal Hydraulic Modeller, you will:

Technical Leadership & Project Delivery

  • Lead 1D-2D hydraulic modelling commissions to assess fluvial, surface water, and tidal flooding (e.g., using FloodModeler Pro, InfoWorks and TUFLOW).
  • Conduct Flood Risk Assessments, hydrological assessments, flood defence design, and postulated water management for residential/industrial developments.
  • Lead and oversee strategic flood risk assessments and environmental impact statements, ensuring regulatory compliance in public and private sectors.
  • Quality assurance of all technical outputs, ensuring maximum accuracy and industry alignment.
  • Develop and support best practices in flood risk modelling through, mentorship for junior team members to guide future professionals.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Proactively manage client relationships within the private/public sectors, clapping sector regulators, to ensure projects remain aligned with expectations and deadlines.
  • Collaborate with others to improve flexibility and accuracy in technical deliverables.
  • Be the principal technical contact on complex/strategic contracts.

Business Growth & Development

  • Assist in preparing internal/external proposals ('tenders') and at competitive bidding stages.
  • Contribute to AECOM’s business development strategy as required.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Core Competencies

  • Education: Degree (2:1 or higher) in Engineering (civil, hydraulic), Geography, Environmental Science, or a related discipline (MSC/PhD would be advantageous).

  • Practical Experience: Extensive hands-on experience in:

    • 1D/2D hydraulic modelling (e.g., FloodModeler Pro, InfoWorks, TUFLOW, Mike Flow).

    • GIS software use (QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo).

  • Techniques for hydrological flood modelling, statistical analysis of water networks, and adaptation policy measures with regulators.

  • Experience leading professional hydraulic models, including:

    • FRAs and water defence designs of varying degrees.
    • Accurate tendering, reporting and time/budget management.
  • Passionate about technical mentorship and inclusive workplace growth.

  • Commercial & Business skills that enable project stability under shifting requirements.
