Job Description

About the Role

The UK water sector is entering a period of unprecedented investment and transformation. As Egis scales its UK Water Business, we are establishing a high-performing Mechanical Engineering team to help shape this next evolution.

Applicants are sought to contribute meaningfully to major UK water and wastewater programs, collaborating in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide senior technical leadership for the mechanical discipline within the UK water/wastewater design team.
  • Act as mechanical discipline lead, sub-lead, or senior technical authority across design, construction support, commissioning, and handover stages for complex treatment projects.
  • Set and maintain mechanical design standards, requirements, risk processes, digital workflows, and quality expectations.
  • Lead and oversee critical mechanical deliverables, including:
    • Key technical decisions,
    • Equipment strategies,
    • Supplier packages,
    • Contractor submissions,
    • Multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Drive integrated coordination across:
    • Process, EICA, civil/structural, architectural, MEP teams, construction, commissioning, operations.
  • Lead client engagement, technical workshops, optioneering, value engineering, design reviews, and constructability/maintainability reviews.
  • Embed modern delivery approaches, such as:
    • Digital design, hydraulic analysis, BIM/3D coordination, automation, standardization, data-led decision-making, supplier integration.
  • Support project directors and managers in:
    • Technical risk management, scope development, resourcing, programme planning, budgeting, change control, design quality.
  • Build and develop the mechanical sub-team through:
    • Recruitment,
    • Mentoring,
    • Line management,
    • Succession planning,
    • Professional development.
  • Contribute to business growth initiatives, including:
    • Work-winning strategies,
    • Client development,
    • Bid leadership,
    • Growth of Egis’ UK Water/Wastewater treatment capability.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
  • BEng/MEng (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status (e.g., via IMechE).

  • 10–12+ years’ relevant experience in mechanical engineering design.

  • Background in **water, wastewater, biosolids/bioresources, or oil & gas industries.

  • Proven track record leading mechanical design and technical assurance on complex, multidisciplinary projects.

  • Deep technical expertise in:

    • Mechanical/process systems (pumps, pipework, valves, tanks, packaged plant, lifting systems),
    • Hydraulics,
    • Maintainability.
  • Strong understanding of UK water sector drivers, including:

    • Water company asset standards,
    • CDM 2015 compliance,
    • Safety-by-design principles,
    • Environmental/regulatory frameworks,
    • Industry-standard delivery models.
  • Demonstrable experience developing people through:

    • Mentoring,
    • Line management,
    • Technical coaching,
    • Recruitment,
    • Resource planning.
  • Exceptional client and stakeholder management skills, with proven ability to lead senior technical discussions and influence project direction.

  • Strong commercial and delivery awareness, including:

    • Scope development,
    • Fee estimation,
    • Programme/resource planning,
    • Risk management,
    • Change control.
  • Strong digital and innovation mindset, with practical experience embedding:

    • BIM/MEP coordination,
    • Automation,
    • Standardized delivery approaches,
    • Improved workflows and hydraulic analysis.
Desirable Skills/Knowledge
  • Prior experience as:
    • Mechanical discipline lead,
    • Design manager,
    • Technical director,
    • Sub-team lead (from consultancy, contracting, water companies, engineering firms, or process industries).
  • UK water sector client network and experience in:
    • Supporting account growth,
    • Opportunity shaping,
    • Bid leadership,
    • Work-winning strategies.
  • Hands-on experience developing:
    • Digital treatment design,
    • Process optimisation,
    • Operational intelligence,
    • Energy/carbon reduction solutions,
    • Modular/offsite delivery,
    • MEP-led project execution.
  • Experience leading:
    • Mechanical technical governance,
    • Communities of practice,
    • Design standards,
    • QA frameworks,
    • Improvement initiatives.
  • Proven ability to build teams during growth phases, including:
    • Skills mapping,
    • Capability planning,
    • Fostering a positive, result-driven, and inclusive culture.
