Job Description

About the Role

The UK water sector is entering a phase of major investment and transformation. To support this, Egis is expanding its UK Water team and constructing a strong Mechanical Engineering capability to deliver national-scale projects.

Applicants must be Driven to help shape the future of UK water and wastewater infrastructure by contributing to mechanically advanced, sustainable, and innovative treatment solutions.

This is an exceptional opportunity to join at a critical point in Egis’ UK journey, establishing and expanding a global-standard mechanical engineering presence with deep expertise in UK water sector delivery.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide senior technical leadership for mechanical discipline within UK water/wastewater treatment design.
  • Serve as mechanical discipline lead, sub-lead, or senior technical authority across design, construction, commissioning, and handover phases for complex projects.
  • Define and enforce mechanical design standards, including design risk assessments, digital workflows, and quality controls.
  • Oversee complex mechanical deliverables, ensuring technical accuracy with equipment strategies, supplier packages, contractor tenders, and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Drive integrated collaboration with Process, EICA (C&EL), Civil/Structural, Architectural, MEP, construction, commissioning, and operations teams.
  • Lead client engagements, including technical workshops, optioneering, value engineering, design reviews, and constructability/maintainability assessments.
  • Embed modern delivery methods, such as:
    • Digital design & BIM/MEP coordination
    • Hydraulic analysis & automation
    • Standardised processes & data-driven decision-making
  • Support project directors and managers with:
    • Technical risk management
    • Scope development & budgeting
    • Programming & resource planning
    • Change control & design quality assurance
  • Build and develop the mechanical sub-team through:
    • Recruitment & mentoring
    • Line management & succession planning
    • Professional development initiatives
  • Strengthen business growth by contributing to:
    • Work winning & bid strategies
    • Client relationship building
    • Market expansion for Egis’ UK water/wastewater capability

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualification: BEng/MEng (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Licensure: Chartered or Incorporated Engineer, registered with a relevant body (e.g., IMechE).
  • Experience: 10–12+ years in mechanical engineering design, with water/wastewater/biosolids or oil & gas focus.
  • Technical Confidence: Proven project leadership in complex multidisciplinary projects.
  • Deep Expertise: Specialised knowledge of:
    • Mechanical systems (pumps, pipework, valves, tanks, packaged plant, lifting systems, hydraulics)
    • Equipment selection & reliability-based design
    • Maintainability & safety-by-design principles
    • UK regulated water sector standards (CDM 2015, source control, environmental compliance)
  • People Management: Experience in mentoring, recruitment, line management, or resource planning.
  • Stakeholder Leadership: Ability to navigate senior technical engagements, influencing project direction with technical credibility.
  • Commercial & Programmatic Awareness: Experience in scope management, fee estimation, programme/risk tracking, and change control.
  • Digital & Innovation Orientation: Expertise in BIM, MEP coordination, automation, standardised processes, or process optimisation.

Desirable

  • Leadership Experience: Previous roles as a technical director, design lead, or sub-team leader in consultancy, contracting, or water/oil & gas businesses.
  • Client Network: Strong UK water client relationships, expertise in developing bid strategies, opportunity scoping, and work winning.
  • Advanced Engineering Proficiency:
    • Digital design for treatment pathways
    • Operational analytics, energy/carbon reduction, or modular solutions
  • Process Optimisation: Experience leading governance, design standardisation, quality frameworks, or initiative improvement.
  • Team Growth: Experience building teams during expansion, including skills mapping, capability planning, and culture development.
