Job Description
Overview
We are looking for a Senior or Principal Systems Engineer with a strong background in Requirements Engineering and Systems Engineering delivery. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys applying Systems Engineering in live projects to support engineering delivery and help project teams navigate complex technical and organisational interfaces. You will play a key role in delivering project success while helping to grow and strengthen our Systems Engineering capability across the Nuclear EMEA business.
Initially, this role will be in support of a defined project which is expected to last for approximately 18 months. Upon conclusion, you will remain with the Systems Engineering team and transition to support one or more new projects within the Nuclear EMEA business.
The Systems Engineering capability within our Nuclear EMEA business is continuing to mature and expand. As a result, you will have the opportunity to influence emerging processes, ways of working and capability development activities in support of the Systems Engineering Capability Lead, helping to shape how Systems Engineering is applied across future projects.
Your role
- Support a key project for a Derby-based client to develop and deliver a manufacturing and support capability acting as a requirements-focussed Systems Engineering SME relating to numerous sub-systems.
- Support the development, review, and management of Component Requirements Documents (CRDs) and derived sub-system requirements.
- Work closely with project Requirements Lead, Buildings & Infrastructure Requirements Lead, engineering teams and client stakeholders to ensure requirements are clear, traceable, and aligned.
- Apply a broader Systems Engineering to the project through a robust understanding of how requirements, interfaces, verification, validation, system decomposition, compliance, and stakeholder engagement support delivery.
- The project will require a presence at the client office in Derby on a regular basis (exact number of days per week to be confirmed) for the duration of the project, as well as ad-hoc presence at joint venture partner offices.
- Following the initial project, continue supporting a diverse portfolio of Nuclear EMEA projects, including Nuclear Fuel Manufacturing, Decommissioning, and Nuclear Fusion programmes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About you
- You have experience providing Systems Engineering leadership and applying its principles and those of Requirements Engineering within complex, delivery-focussed engineering projects, ideally in nuclear, defence, aerospace, or other highly regulated sectors.
- You have experience using requirements management tools (ideally IBM DOORS Classic). Experience with MBSE tools (MagicDraw – a.k.a Cameo, Capella, or Sparx Enterprise Architect) would also be beneficial.
- You are comfortable acting as the sole Systems Engineering focal point within a given project or workstream, engaging with technical stakeholders to clarify intent and support engineering delivery where information, requirements and interfaces may be immature.
- You work effectively with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, project management and client stakeholder groups.
- You are passionate about Systems Engineering and keen to support the growth and development of the Systems Engineering capability. This includes being able to explain the purpose and value of Systems Engineering to internal and external personnel with varied levels of Systems Engineering experience.
- You have experience supporting, managing and developing junior engineers and enjoy sharing knowledge and best practices.
- You hold, or are working towards, INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional certification (ASEP, ESEP, CSEP), with Chartership of a relevant institution being advantageous.
- You are able to recognise opportunities where Systems Engineering can add value, helping support business growth through client engagement, relationship development and delivery excellence.
- You bring proven Systems Engineering expertise and a collaborative approach to delivering high-quality engineering solutions.
