A Little More About Your Role…
We are looking to recruit a Senior or Principal Transport Planner to join our Passenger Transit Group within the Planning & Mobility team working across the UK. The role can be based in any of WSP UK offices, including Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, London or Manchester, with hybrid working allowing for a mix of in-office and home working. If you would like to discuss this opportunity before making an application then please contact Andrew.Trueman@wsp.com.
Responsibilities
As a more senior member of the Passenger Transit Group, you will work across all passenger modes to lead the development of transit schemes and projects from inception through to completion. This is a varied role with responsibilities including:
- Leading or contributing to a variety of projects and proposals (both technical and commercial inputs) and delivering high quality outputs in line with client requirements.
- Bringing your passion and knowledge of Passenger Transit to deliver high quality and effective outcomes for our clients.
- Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team; working with our other WSP service lines to deliver large multi-disciplinary projects from concept to delivery.
- Building relationships and playing a leading role in securing and delivering work for our large local client portfolio.
- Undertake a lead role on technical review and checking of deliverables within the team.
- Support the ongoing development of the junior members of the team, either as a People Manager or through mentoring.
- Leading the financial performance of your projects and the commercial performance of our team.
- Making an active contribution to WSP's four key pillars (People; Clients & Growth; Operations; and Expertise).
You will have an opportunity to work collaboratively with our Net Zero and Future Mobility growth areas on a range of innovative strategies for our public and private sector clients, as well as being a key member of our expertise practice group.
Your Team
We have a core Passenger Transit leadership team spread across the UK, leading regional client relationships and supporting key projects in their specialist areas.
We can offer a holistic, whole system and lifecycle approach across all stages of a transit project and all modes, either individual stages or together.
You would be a part of the wider UK team working in Passenger Transit which is around 30 strong, supplemented by colleagues across the global business, enabling us to deploy significant multi-disciplinary teams when our clients need a whole life, multi-stage approach to project delivery. We are ‘mode-agnostic’ and cover all options whether on road or rails. Our team members benefit from having front-line operational experience, and many have worked alongside or within Regional, Combined and Local Authorities, giving us direct relevant experience to understand our client’s challenges.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
