Astutes Power Team Recruitment for Senior Process Engineer

Astutes Power Team is recruiting for a Senior Process Engineer to support a fleet of Biomass and Energy from Waste Power Stations across the United Kingdom.

Working within the Centralised Engineering Team

You’ll be responsible for supporting the fleet with all aspects of process engineering across combustion, flue gas treatment, emissions control, steam cycle interfaces, and gasification processes.

You will act as the senior process authority on assigned projects, supporting plant performance and reliability as well as driving improvements across the assets.

Responsibilities And Duties

As the Senior Process Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Provide technical support to operational sites and project teams across operational challenges, process optimisation, plant improvements, and associated engineering projects.
  • Lead and participate in root cause analyses, technical investigations, and incident reviews, delivering robust conclusions, practical recommendations, and effective implementation of corrective actions.
  • Identify process risks, performance constraints, and recurring operational issues, recommending practical mitigations, improvement measures, and longer-term engineering solutions.
  • Undertake DCS investigations and process data analysis to understand plant behaviour, diagnose operational issues, support troubleshooting, and inform effective decision-making.
  • Support client reporting by providing clear technical diagnosis and explanation of process performance, plant incidents, improvement actions, and engineering recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain process engineering tools, procedures, templates, and technical guidance to promote consistent engineering standards and good practice across the fleet.
  • Support the development and implementation of technical procedures, policies, and processes across the company, with a focus on improving plant performance, reliability, compliance, and safety.
  • Mentor and support colleagues across operational sites and central teams, sharing process engineering expertise, technical knowledge, and lessons learned to strengthen capability and performance.

Professional Qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following:

  • Degree qualified in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards professional registration with an appropriate engineering institution would be desirable.
  • Holder of NEBOSH or at least IOSH in Health & Safety (or similar).

Personal Skills

The Senior Process Engineer role would suit someone with:

  • Demonstrable professional experience in process engineering within power generation, thermal power, biomass, Energy from Waste (EfW), or similar industrial process environments.
  • Practical understanding of process control and Distributed Control Systems (DCS), including the interpretation of trends, alarms, process parameters, and historical plant data.
  • Ability to interpret and work with P&IDs, process flow diagrams, process data, operating parameters, and engineering documentation.
  • Knowledge of relevant UK legislation, engineering standards, environmental requirements, and process safety principles applicable to power generation and industrial process plant.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, with the confidence to investigate complex plant issues and reach evidence-based engineering conclusions.
