Senior Commercial / Procurement Manager – Defence
Location: Bristol
Working pattern: Full-time, hybrid - typically three days per week in the office or on client sites, depending on project requirements.
Complex defence programmes need sound commercial judgement, effective procurement and people who can challenge an approach when it matters. A growing consultancy team is looking for experienced Commercial and Procurement Managers to support public and private sector defence clients across the full commercial lifecycle. You’ll help shape procurement decisions, strengthen supplier performance and manage commercial risk on programmes supporting the UK defence sector.
The role
Assignments will vary across clients and projects, with responsibilities including:
- Developing procurement and commercial strategies that reflect programme priorities, risks and delivery requirements.
- Managing procurement activity from sourcing and tender evaluation through contract award and ongoing contract management.
- Developing and assuring business cases, commercial strategies and contracting approaches.
- Leading negotiations and handling complex commercial discussions with clients and suppliers.
- Identifying and managing commercial risks, with effective governance and compliance.
- Improving supplier performance through contract management, supplier relationships and category management.
- Supporting business transformation, change and continuous improvement.
- Leading and developing colleagues through coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing.

You’ll work closely with senior stakeholders, chair internal and external meetings, and provide clear advice on commercial decisions and their implications.
What you’ll bring
You’ll have substantial commercial or procurement experience in a relevant sector, with the confidence to take ownership of decisions and guide others through complex challenges. Relevant experience includes:
- Procurement, sourcing, contract placement and/or contract management.
- Assessing commercial options and balancing value, risk and delivery priorities.
- Applying programme, portfolio or project management tools.
- Evaluating tenders and exercising sound commercial judgement.
- Developing contract and supplier management strategies that improve value and performance.
- Managing senior stakeholder relationships, including sensitive or contentious discussions.
- Leading teams and providing strategic direction.

A professional qualification in business, procurement, supply chain management, law, project management or a related discipline is welcomed, as is equivalent practical experience.
You should also have training or relevant experience in the Defence and Security Public Contracts Regulations, Public Contracts Regulations and/or the Procurement Act 2023.

Security requirements
Due to the requirements of these projects, applicants must be sole UK nationals and able to obtain and maintain UK Ministry of Defence Security Clearance (SC). Existing SC clearance is desirable, but you do not need to hold it to apply.
Individual assignments may also be subject to security vetting and trade control restrictions, which can affect eligibility.
