Responsibilities
About the Team
Our team provides legal support to ByteDance's new and existing global B2C and B2B emerging hardware and software products including VR devices, mini drama and novel platforms, and mobile and console games. The team is seeking a highly experienced, bright, and capable product and commercial counsel to join the team, with a primary focus on UK/EU legal matters and a global remit. The role will be an integral resource for ByteDance's global emerging product and business teams by:
- Reviewing new applications, features, functionalities and initiatives and providing guidance, assessing legal implications and suggesting risk mitigation strategies
- Negotiating commercial agreements and reviewing matters related to emerging products
Candidates must be highly collaborative, self-motivated, strategic thinkers, and intellectually curious.
Responsibilities
- Partner with legal and product teams globally to review products, features, and new initiatives, providing risk mitigation strategies and practical, compliance-focused solutions - with a primary focus on UK/EU regulatory frameworks.
- Draft and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements (supplier, distribution, re-seller, services, sponsorship, marketing, technology, media), review marketing campaigns and other initiatives, and develop contract templates and processes.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams (product, public policy, communications, trust & safety, marketing etc) on external communications, policy development, and product launches across UK/EU and global markets.
- Collaborate with global subject matter experts and advise product and business teams on UK/EU legal laws and regulations, including GDPR, DSA, UK Online Safety Act, DMA, consumer protection, IP, and online safety - while supporting global compliance.
- Monitor and assess UK/EU legislative developments impacting platforms and provide timely, actionable advice to the business.
- Provide general legal support across the team on UK/EU matters, as needed.
- Work cross-functionally in different time zones with business and legal colleagues locally and worldwide to support the global business.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Qualified lawyer in the UK (Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England & Wales) or an EU member state.
- Extensive post-qualification legal experience at a law firm or in-house.
- Strong experience in product counseling and drafting and negotiating a wide range of contracts with a focus on UK/EU markets.
- Experience in the following areas: hardware, software, virtual reality, consumer protection, marketing, contests, platform liability, technology, intellectual property, music and entertainment/content, media, data protection and privacy.
- Ability to assess legal, practical and business risks in a fast-paced environment and provide sound advice under tight deadlines.
- Proven track record of operating independently, strong attention to detail, ability to support a heavy volume of work across business functions and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to take control of matters and drive them forward to conclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Dual qualification in another EU jurisdiction or the US.
- Prior in-house experience at a technology company.
- Deep knowledge of EU/UK regulatory frameworks, including GDPR, DSA, DMA, and the UK Online Safety Act.
- Experience with mobile and console gaming, VR, or digital content platforms.
