Senior Product Designer
About the Role
The Senior Product Designer is responsible for shaping complex product experiences that require a strong understanding of user needs, business objectives, and system dependencies. The role focuses on structuring end-to-end user journeys, translating research insights into practical design solutions, and supporting teams in navigating ambiguous problem spaces.
The initial primary focus of this role is bp’s enterprise design system — designing and maintaining the tokens, components, and patterns that keep bp’s digital products consistent, accessible, and easy to build. Over time, the role will transition to contribute across the broader Developer Experience (DevEx) portfolio, including the internal developer platform and its tooling, and AI-enabled developer tooling.
Work at this level requires strong foundations in interaction design, service thinking, and visual design. The role contributes to the development of scalable product patterns and ensures design outcomes remain consistent with established systems and accessibility standards. Ensuring EAA / WCAG AA compliance across all design-system tokens and components is a core driver of this role, not an afterthought.
Awareness of emerging technologies, including AI-enabled tools and product capabilities, supports informed design decisions and efficient design workflows.
Please note that roles based out of SJS or Sunbury will move to Timber Square, Southwark, from Q4 2027.
You will work with
This role operates across the design-system federation model, collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, researchers, and other designers — both within the Design Engineering team and across the product teams adopting the design system. Partnership with frontend engineers is central, ensuring strong consistency between Figma designs and delivered code.
Engagement may also extend to federation delegates, content, operations, and support teams when product experiences intersect with broader operational processes. The team values thoughtful discussion, constructive feedback, and knowledge sharing. Designers contribute to maintaining strong design practices while driving adoption of the design system across disciplines.
What you will deliver
- Design-system ownership: Own and evolve the design system — define and maintain tokens, components, and patterns in Figma; produce usage guidance, specifications, and documentation; and enable teams to adopt the system correctly and consistently.
- Figma-to-product consistency: Act as the design guardian for the design system, ensuring components are used correctly across products and partnering with engineers to close design-to-build gaps between Figma and delivered code.
- Accessibility ownership: Ensure design-system components meet EAA / WCAG AA requirements by design — embedding accessibility into specifications, states, and usage guidance, and considering all component states and edge cases.
- Research and insight synthesis: Plan or support interviews, usability testing, and behavioural observation, synthesising findings into journey maps, experience principles, and structured design recommendations.
- Experience design: Define user journeys, task flows, and interaction patterns for complex product workflows. Service blueprints may be created to illustrate user interactions and supporting system processes.
- Design execution and prototyping: Develop wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity interfaces using established design systems and accessibility standards.
- Design facilitation and collaboration: Facilitate workshops, feedback sessions, and collaborative discussions to improve design outcomes and support shared understanding across product and engineering teams.
- AI-assisted design exploration: Use AI-supported tools for exploration, research synthesis, or documentation, with attention to accuracy, ethics, and inclusivity.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What you will need to be successful
You do not need to meet every point below. If you have a strong combination of the essential criteria and are keen to grow into the rest, we would love to hear from you.
Essential
- You have several years of hands-on product design experience delivering complex digital experiences.
- You have designed and maintained enterprise design systems — creating and evolving tokens, components, and patterns that scale across multiple products.
- You design fluently in Figma, using modern features such as variants, tokens, componentisation, and structured dev-handover.
- You apply accessibility standards in your work, designing to meet WCAG AA / EAA requirements and accounting for all component states.
- You can show, through a portfolio, how you reason through problems, design interactions, and make progress in ambiguous situations.
- You plan or contribute to user research and turn what you learn into structured design decisions.
- You explain and defend design decisions clearly in writing and discussion, and you work closely with engineers on design-to-code handover (without needing to write production code).
Desirable
- You have any combination of experience facilitating workshops, critiques, or cross-functional alignment sessions.
- You are comfortable exploring AI-assisted tools and workflows for research synthesis, exploration, or documentation.
- You have supported the growth of other designers through mentoring, pairing, or feedback.
- You have familiarity with frontend technologies sufficient to hold productive feasibility conversations with engineers.
At this level, the Senior Product Designer contributes to initiatives spanning multiple product areas or teams. Their work connects insights, product priorities, and operational considerations to deliver scalable design outcomes. Informal mentorship and fostering alignment across teams is a key aspect of the role.
