The Role
The fashion industry is broken. Billions of garments end up in landfill, not because they're unwanted, but because the secondhand supply chain is offline and manual. This company is fixing that. They're building the AI-powered infrastructure for the global secondhand clothing trade, digitising an opaque, manual market into a structured, searchable inventory layer. Backed by leading investors and tripling year-on-year, they've already saved millions of items from landfill.
This isn't just another backend role. You'll join a small, senior product engineering squad, owning the entire ecommerce journey for a marketplace that handles hundreds of thousands of unique items monthly. This means designing the transaction layer for a market that has never had technology, integrating novel AI classification into the core user experience. It's a seat for a product-obsessed engineer who wants to build systems that directly drive GMV, not just maintain existing features or work from pre-defined specs.

The Work
- Own the end-to-end backend systems for the core marketplace, from item discovery and search to checkout, payments, and post-purchase. Your work directly impacts GMV.
- Integrate novel AI classification engines into the product, building services that seamlessly connect AI-driven grading, pricing, and categorisation to the marketplace experience.
- Architect and scale systems to handle 500K+ unique items per month today, with a clear roadmap to millions. Balance rapid delivery with long-term scalability.
- Shape technical direction and engineering standards across the backend, contributing to architectural decisions and challenging assumptions in a fast-growing environment.
- Mentor and elevate junior engineers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing, raising the technical bar for the team.
What You Bring
- 3-6 years of backend engineering experience, shipping production systems that handle real traffic and revenue.
- Strong system design, data modelling, and API architecture fundamentals. You can design services from scratch.
- Proven experience in consumer tech (marketplace, fintech, or similar), building for end-users at scale. Proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript (or comparable stack).
- A product engineering mindset: you connect technical decisions to business outcomes and thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced environments. You've built AI capabilities in production or personal projects.

This is an on-site role in London, 4-5 days a week.
