Job Description
The Senior Product Manager, Payments will cover a maternity leave for a period of 12 months, stepping into ownership of specific payments product streams and maintaining continuity and momentum on initiatives already in flight. You'll work as an individual contributor, owning your product areas end-to-end and managing two squads.
Payments sits at the centre of how Shawbrook moves money for savers and borrowers alike, from deposit funding flows through to supplier and third-party payment processing arrangements. This role decides how those product areas evolve day to day, while the permanent postholder is away.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- Own the end-to-end product lifecycle for one or more payments product streams, from discovery and ideation through to delivery, launch, and post-launch iteration.
- Represent your product area's requirements through any in-flight initiatives, ensuring no loss of pace or institutional knowledge during the handover period.
- Maintain a clear, prioritised backlog for your product streams, working closely with Engineering to translate business and customer needs into deliverable requirements.
Roadmap & Prioritisation
- Maintain and deliver the agreed roadmap for your product areas, gathering and summarising demand from business stakeholders.
- Partner with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Compliance, Finance, Commercial) to prioritise initiatives that deliver ROI, reduce risk exposure, and align with the bank's strategic goals.
- Maintain a data-led view of product and customer/colleague impact, grounding prioritisation in evidence rather than stakeholder volume.
Supplier & Regulatory Management
- Manage relationships with payment suppliers, scheme partners, and processors, including input into contract terms and pricing agreements.
- Ensure product decisions are made in line with legal and regulatory requirements relevant to UK payments and financial services.
Business Case & Value Realisation
- Build and support business cases for payments product investment, using real, in-flight examples as reference points.
- Ensure your initiatives have robust business cases and stakeholder buy-in to move swiftly into delivery.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Act as the day-to-day link between Engineering, Compliance, Commercial, and Customer Success on your product streams.
- Escalate roadmap conflicts or resourcing trade-offs to the Product Lead where consensus isn't possible.
- Bring a mindset of continuous discovery and structured prioritisation to your product areas.
Value This Role Will Add
- Provides continuity of ownership for payments product streams during the maternity leave period, with no gap in delivery or stakeholder relationships.
- Owns business outcomes (not just requirements-gathering) for the product areas in scope.
- Keeps payments product decisions aligned with the bank's wider platform and commercial strategy.
- Maintains the quality of supplier and regulatory relationships built up over time.
- Elevates the payments function's credibility by clearly articulating the value and rationale behind prioritisation decisions.
Qualifications
- At least 5 years' product management experience, ideally in payments, fintech, or broader financial services.
- Proven track record of launching and managing successful digital products, with ownership of the detail as well as the bigger picture.
- Comfortable working closely with engineering teams; technical fluency (e.g. exposure to APIs, core banking platforms, or coding) is a strong advantage.
- Experience navigating supplier or partner relationships, and awareness of the compliance and regulatory considerations relevant to UK financial services.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail and a data-driven approach to decision-making.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships across teams quickly.
- Experience with agile methodologies and tools such as JIRA or similar.
- Able to operate independently and make confident decisions in a fast-paced environment with imperfect information, important given the nature of stepping into a maternity cover role mid-flight.
