Help shape and maintain Bristol's highway network

Are you an experienced highways professional looking for your next challenge? Do you enjoy leading projects, solving problems, and seeing tangible improvements delivered on the ground?

We are looking for a technically skilled Senior Technician to join Bristol City Council's Strategic Highway Maintenance Team. In this rewarding role, you will take the lead in planning, managing, and delivering a varied programme of highway maintenance projects that keep Bristol moving safely and efficiently.

About The Role

As a Senior Technician, you will play a key role in delivering planned highway maintenance schemes across the city. Working alongside experienced colleagues, contractors, and stakeholders, you will manage projects from inception through to completion, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

Our Varied Programme Includes:

  • Road resurfacing and patching
  • Highway drainage improvements
  • Road marking maintenance
  • Winter maintenance activities
  • Preventative treatments including surface dressing, micro asphalt, and footway slurry seal programmes

You will provide technical expertise, supervise complex projects, coordinate resources, and contribute to the ongoing development of maintenance strategies and service improvements across Bristol's transport network.

What You'll Bring

We're looking for someone who combines technical knowledge with practical problem-solving, enabled by strong project management and communication skills.

You Will Have:

  • An HNC/HND in Civil Engineering (or equivalent qualification) or substantial technical experience relevant to highway engineering and maintenance projects.
  • Experience managing and monitoring projects, budgets, programmes, and contractors.
  • A solid understanding of highway maintenance practices and current industry standards.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and safe working practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • The ability to work independently while also supporting and developing colleagues.

Experience working within local government and knowledge of project management software such as Microsoft Project would be advantageous but is not essential.
