Senior Civil Project Engineer

Location: Scotland (hybrid/site as required) 2 weeks on site, 2 weeks WFH

Rate: £500 - £550 per day, Outside IR35

Start Date: ASAP

Duration: 6 month rolling contract

Turner Lovell are recruiting an experienced Senior Project Engineer with a strong civils background to support the delivery of a major 400kV transmission infrastructure project in Scotland for a leading global energy organisation.

This is a key delivery role with a strong focus on civil engineering works within a high-voltage substation environment, including foundations, earthworks, drainage, roads, structures, cable trenches, and associated infrastructure.

The successful candidate will take ownership of defined civils work packages, coordinating engineering, design, procurement, subcontractors, and site delivery to ensure works are completed safely, on programme, to specification, and within budget.

Duties

  • Take full responsibility for the delivery of allocated civils work packages across a major 400kV transmission project, ensuring performance against cost, programme, quality, and technical requirements.
  • Manage the engineering and delivery of major civil works including earthworks, foundations, reinforced concrete, drainage, roads, hardstanding, cable trenches, and duct banks.
  • Coordinate the delivery of equipment and structural foundations, including transformer/reactor foundations, steelwork foundations, and associated substation infrastructure.
  • Manage interfaces between civil, structural, electrical, and commissioning teams, ensuring works are appropriately sequenced and coordinated.
  • Review and coordinate civil engineering designs, drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Work closely with Design Engineers and Technical Leads to ensure designs are suitable for construction and aligned with project requirements.
  • Manage civils subcontractor packages from procurement and mobilisation through construction, completion, and handover.
  • Ensure appropriate ITPs, inspection records, quality documentation, as-built information, and handover documentation are in place.
  • Support site teams with technical queries, design changes, RFIs, non-conformances, and construction issues.
  • Monitor and report project risks, variations, technical issues, and opportunities, escalating where required.
  • Ensure civil works are delivered in accordance with relevant health & safety, environmental, quality, and project requirements.

  • HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in project engineering, civil engineering, or package management within the energy, transmission, utilities, or major infrastructure sectors.
  • Experience working on 132kV, 275kV, or preferably 400kV substation projects.
  • Strong understanding of substation civils, including foundations, earthworks, drainage, roads, reinforced concrete, cable trenches, and ducting.
  • Experience managing civil engineering subcontractors and construction packages.
  • Strong understanding of quality management, ITPs, inspections, NCRs, and construction handover.
  • Strong IT and project reporting skills.
  • Willingness to work on site in Scotland as required.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Civils Project Engineer / Senior Project Engineer to play a key role in the delivery of a major 400kV transmission project, taking ownership of significant civil engineering packages within a long-term programme of critical UK grid infrastructure.
