Airbus Belfast is seeking an experienced Lead Design Engineer to direct technical design engineering activities for Structures and Systems Installation. Reporting within our Design Engineering Department, you will play a critical role in providing leadership and technical authority, with dedicated responsibility for night-shift Material Review Board (MRB) design support.
A key feature of the job is cultivating and maturing skills and experience within the Design Engineering Department. This will include taking action to ensure that lessons learned are embodied into updated procedures and/or deliverables. Particular emphasis will be on ensuring that the design of the product meets the applicable design requirements laid down by the design authority and the successful candidates will direct the activities of staff within the integrated product design team to ensure that this goal is met.
Provide coverage on nightshift for all MRB related Design activities.
How you will contribute to the team
- Directly lead and line manage a team of design engineers, driving end-to-end team management, skill development, and cross-functional coordination with internal departments, senior specialists, customers, and suppliers.
- Serve as the functional engineering lead for designated programs or projects, ensuring all commitments are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in full compliance with customer specifications and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain deep design engineering expertise to provide authoritative technical advice across user departments, optimizing the design-to-manufacturing workflow and solving complex engineering challenges with innovative approaches.
- Conduct comprehensive project feasibility studies to evaluate technical viability, guide extensions to existing programs, and identify new aerospace engineering opportunities.
About you
Essential criteria
The position requires a comprehensive combination of applied and theoretical knowledge of aircraft structures and systems or, a specialist area within design engineering. It also requires thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the applicable regulatory requirements, analysis methods, testing procedures and engineering processes. Such understanding will have been gained by way of considerable experience and therefore candidates must:
- Possess a minimum of a BSc/BEng degree together with a minimum of 3 years’ relevant design engineering experience to include management/project management responsibility.
OR - Have lesser qualifications with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant design engineering experience to include management/project management responsibility.
- Demonstrate a proven track record of engaging, influencing, and collaborating with senior leadership, customers, suppliers and Certification Authorities.
- Demonstrate capability in leading, mentoring, and developing high-performing teams of engineers, fostering operational resilience, maintaining high morale, and driving strategic execution through periods of organisational change and growth.
- Demonstrate organisational command and high-impact communication skills, with the personal drive and strategic vision required to present complex engineering concepts clearly and steer multi-faceted engineering operations.
