What's the role?

This is a senior engineering role responsible for leading and managing the delivery of high-quality, compliant and cost-effective engineering design solutions for substation and utility infrastructure projects.

The role spans the full project lifecycle from tender and feasibility through to detailed design, construction support and handover. You will be responsible for co-ordinating and assuring integrated designs aligned with client requirements, industry standards and programme constraints.

You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with internal stakeholders and external partners to ensure successful project delivery.

The scope covers substation design (Civils, Primary, Protection and Control, Communications and MEP elements) relating to distribution and transmission systems in the range 11kV to 132kV typically.

Key Aspects Of The Role Include

  • Lead and manage the design assurance and delivery of design packages to agreed contractual timescales
  • Supporting projects from tender through to completion
  • Co-ordinating multi-disciplinary designs across technical interfaces
  • Preparing and reviewing engineering documentation including RFIs and Technical Queries
  • Identifying and managing design risks, contract changes and supporting CEs/EWNs
  • Collaborating with clients, suppliers and internal teams
  • Mentoring and supporting junior engineers
  • Supporting project reporting, reviews and stakeholder communication

Working Conditions

  • Monday - Friday, 40 contractual hours per week. This role will be offered on a remote working basis with occasional travel to BRUSH Group locations across the UK for team meetings & site visits.
  • Attendance at our office locations may be required to support onboarding, training and development where necessary. Therefore, candidates should live within a comfortable commuting distance to either our Cardiff/Glasgow/Hook or Loughborough office locations.

Key Responsibilities

Management

  • Managing design team workload across allocated projects
  • Establishing an appropriate design team for each project based on its scope and complexity
  • Allocating work packages to design engineers for completion
  • Managing progress and ensuring timely delivery of design outputs
  • Identifying design issues (changes and risks) and liaising with the designer, PM and commercial colleagues to resolve
  • Be the design technical point of contact for all stakeholders
  • Prepare and provide project technical summaries and progress reports relating to design as required
  • Manage technical administration activities relating to design i.e. document control etc.

Engineering

  • Ensure that all contract design engineering requirements are captured
  • Manage design standards compliance and standards updates
  • Lead design verification and validation activities to ensure that all technical requirements have been met by designs
  • Ensuring that design engineering assurance activities are completed
  • Ensure engineering quality processes are implemented and met for all design outputs
  • Review design TQ’s and RFI’s prior to submission
  • Review client design review comments for scope, engineering, commercial or schedule impacts and liaise with commercial to raise an appropriate EWN or CE to cover any changes
  • Scheduling, leading and managing interdisciplinary design reviews and managing subsequent actions
  • Liaising with operations teams regarding construction methodology, testing and commissioning optimisation and methodology impact on design philosophy

Programme

  • Assisting with ensuring the design WBS matches the contracted scope.
  • Assisting with inputting the list of design deliverables into the programme
  • Assisting with developing the programme of works
  • Assisting with integrating risk mitigation activities relating to design into the programme
  • Ensure that activity hours relating to work packages are communicated and adhered to by designers
  • Identifying schedule risks and highlighting them to the PM
  • Supporting the planner to update activity progress
  • Supporting the planner to understand and implement any schedule tactical changes to mitigate delays

Commercial

  • Assist commercial colleagues with estimating resource type and numbers for each project
  • Allocating resources to support the technical and commercial aspects of projects
  • Advising commercial colleagues if elements of works need to be outsourced
  • Advising commercial colleagues which sub-contractors should be consulted for prices for outsourced works
  • Evaluating technical aspects of returned sub-contractor responses to bid questions
  • Evaluating technical aspects of internal design colleagues responses to bid questions
  • Ensure that the type of resource in the bid cost build up is allocated to the project
  • Identifying commercial risks and highlighting them to the PM
  • Supporting the PM to update activity progress and forecast cost to complete
  • Supporting the planner to understand and implement any schedule tactical changes to mitigate delays
  • Identify project changes from TQ’s, RFI’s, Client review comments and other elements of the progress of the works

Qualifications

  • Degree Level qualification in Electrical Engineering, or
  • Relevant NVQ Level 6.
  • Chartered Management Institute Level 4 qualification; or
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng), candidates who are working towards this status will be considered.

Experience

  • Previous Project Engineering experience in the HV electrical industry is essential
  • Substation Design understanding within the range of 11kV to 132kV is essential
  • Understanding of substation HV electrical design philosophies is essential
  • Excellent report writing skills is essential
  • Working knowledge of CDM Designers responsibilities is essential
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously is essential
  • Strong decision-making skills is essential
  • Familiarity with common industry standards is essential
  • Experience with UK DNO’s desirable
  • CDM regulations as relating to Principal Designer function is desirable
  • Experience of working with NEC contract requirements desirable
  • Experience of customer connections work preferable but not essential
  • Understanding of under-ground cable design principles desirable
  • Ability to work with NEC contract requirements particularly Option A and Option C is desirable
